The Hand girls’ basketball team kicked off the postseason by beating North Haven in an SCC Tournament quarterfinal contest last week. The Tigers have an overall record of 18-3 and are on a 10-game win streak as they get ready to face East Haven in the semis.
On Feb. 22, the top-seeded Tigers notched a 58-42 victory against No. 8 North Haven in the SCC quarterfinals at Sheehan High School. Hand jumped out to a 9-3 lead after the first quarter and then outscored the Indians 23-11 in the second to bring a 32-14 advantage into halftime.
Senior Sarah Wohlgemuth scored 20 points, while sophomore Brooke Salutari netted 18 points for the Tigers in the victory.
Hand is playing No. 4 seed East Haven in the SCC semifinals at Jonathan Law High School on Monday, Feb. 24 at 7:45 p.m. With a win, Hand would play the winner of No. 6 Shelton and No. 7 Hamden for the conference title at Branford High School at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Boys’ Basketball
The Tigers lost their last two regular-season games to finish with a record of 6-14.
On Feb. 19, Hand took a 52-39 defeat at Law in an SCC Hammonasset Division matchup. Two days later, the Tigers lost a road game at Sheehan by the score of 62-50.
Wrestling
The Tigers finished in 14th place out of 25 teams at last weekend’s Class L State Championship. Hand scored 61 points at the meet, which took place at Bristol Central High School on Feb. 21 and 22.
Junior Rocky Mayer took fourth place in the 170-pound division for the Tigers. After winning three matches earlier in the tournament, Mayer lost by pinfall at the 4:05 mark of the consolation final to finish in fourth place and earn a medal.
Fellow junior Brian Beirne also a collected a medal for Hand by taking fifth place in the 132-pound division. Beirne recorded four wins in the bracket, capping off his run with a 12-6 decision victory versus Cameron Cruz of Bristol Eastern in the fifth-place bout.
Boys’ Indoor Track
Hand’s 4x400 relay team claimed fourth place at the State Open Championship last weekend. The Tigers’ performance resulted in four points that put them in 35th place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 22.
The Tigers’ 4x400 relay senior Ameen Parks, fellow senior Besufekad Opstrup, junior Connor Parthasarthy, and fellow junior Carson Hines recorded a time of 3:30.77 on their way to placing fourth at the State Open. The 4x200 relay featuring junior Josh Stewart, Hines, junior Daven Pelaez, and junior Braeden Kosiewicz took eighth place in 1:34.56. Hand’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of Pelaez, Kosiewicz, senior Corey Duncanson, and sophomore Paul Odyniec finished in 13th place with a time of 3:49.57.
Junior Dante Zucconi finished in 11th place for the 1,600 meter-run by hitting the finish line in 4:35.13. Stewart placed 13th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.75 seconds. Junior Bryce Myers cleared 12 feet in the pole vault for a 14th-place finish.
Girls’ Indoor Track
Junior Anna Steffen represented the Tigers at the State Open Championship last weekend. Steffen competed in the 3,200-meter run and finished in 13th place with a mark of 11:36.08.
Gymnastics
Hand completed its regular season with a record of 10-5 after earning one win and taking two defeats last week.
On Feb. 18, the Tigers posted a 131.4-127.1 road victory versus Law, which has just won the SCC title during the previous week. Sophomore Paige Dean took first place on the beam with a score of 8.8, while senior Carly-Anna Barba finished first for the floor with an 8.7.
On Feb. 21, Hand took on Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde in an away meet at the Gymnastics and Cheerleading Academy of Connecticut. The Tigers posted a score of 124.30 to take losses against both Ludlowe (137.25) and Warde (128.25).
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme (H-C-VR-OL) girls’ ice hockey team took two defeats to finish the regular season at 5-15. The Tigers are competing in the SCC Tournament this week.
On Feb. 17, the Tigers lost a road game against Wilton-Norwalk-McMahon by a 7-2 score at Winter Garden Ice Arena. The following day, they dropped a 6-0 contest against Greenwich on the road at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink.
H-C-VR-OL is the No. 6 seed in the SCC Tournament and will open the draw with a first-round road game against No. 3 West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at Bennett Rink at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24. With a victory, the Tigers would play at No. 2 seed Guilford in the semifinals at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink on Wednesday, Feb. 26. If the Tigers win that game, they would advance to the SCC final at Bennett Rink on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m.
