H-K’s Sprint Medley Relay Prevails at State Open; Perry Takes Class S Title at 285

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ indoor track team saw its 1,600 sprint medley relay take first place at the State Open Championship last week. With that performance, along with a second-place showing from junior Matt Jennings in the 1,000-meter run, the Cougars scored 18 points to finish in a tie for fourth place overall at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 22.

H-K’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of junior Aidan Coleman, senior Seth Regan, senior Dmytri Mallon, and Jennings recorded a time of 3:37.15 to finish first at the State Open. The team beat out the second-place quartet from Fairfield Prep, which finished at 3:38.15. The Cougars’ unit had previously placed first at the Class S State Championship with a time of 3:45.03.

Jennings came in second place for the 1,000 by running a time of 2:29.56 at the Open. He was less than one second behind Stonington’s Rhys Hammond (2:28.66) for the top spot.

Regan also placed 10th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash by running a time of 6.65 seconds for the Cougars.

H-K’s 4x400 relay of junior Max Cozean, senior Luke Sodergren, junior Eamon Sweeney, and Mallon took 14th place (3:37.05). The 4x200 relay featuring senior Dalton Modehn, Mallon, Coleman, and Regan came in 18th place (1:36.66).

Girls’ Indoor Track

Junior Kedarjah Lewis placed in three events to score 13 points for the Cougars and put them in 15th place at last week’s State Open Championship.

Lewis ran a time of 7.32 seconds to place second in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash and then came back with a 7.31 in the finals for second overall in the event. In the 300-meter dash, Lewis hit the finish line in a time of 42.00 seconds to take sixth place. Lewis also competed in the long jump, where she recorded a leap of 17 feet-3.25 inches for another sixth-place performance.

Wrestling

The H-K wrestling team came in second place at the Class S State Championship last week. Led by a first-place finish from junior Thomas Perry, the Cougars scored 157 points on their way to runner-up honors at the Class S meet, which was hosted at Killingly High School on Feb. 21 and 22.

Perry claimed the state title in the 285-pound weight class by pinning Somuadina Agunyego of Montville 1:49 into their championship match. Perry pinned his first opponent at the 1:54 mark, won his quarterfinal match by default in just 28 seconds, and then prevailed via pinfall 38 seconds into his semifinal clash in order to reach the title bout.

Junior Cameron Hines and sophomore Nicholas Glynn finished third in the 106- and 152-pound divisions, respectively, for H-K. Hines won a 6-0 decision over Montville’s Blake Chapman in the consolation final, while Glynn defeated Anthony Deicicchi of Seymour by a score 6-0 in his consolation final. Both athletes won four matches at the championship.

Sophomore Ben Williams took fourth place in the 138-pound weight class. Williams won three bouts before losing a 3-2 decision to Shane Franson from Lyman Memorial-Windham Tech in the consolation final.

Junior Matthew Carson finished fourth at 182 pounds for the Cougars. Carson won three bouts on his way to making the consolation final, where he took a 2-1 defeat against Linards Bekeris from Somers.

Sophomore Ethan Wright finished fifth in the 113-pound division by winning a 17-13 decision against Windham’s Alex Gonzalez in the fifth-place bout. Wright won four matches in the tournament.

Fellow sophomore Samuel Young took fifth place at 145 pounds by edging out Cooper Barrett of Somers in the fifth-place duel. Young recorded five total victories at the state meet.

Sophomore won three matches on his way to placing sixth in the 170-pound division for H-K.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving squad competed against Classical-University for its final home meet of the season on Feb. 18. The Cougars came away with a 61-59 victory at H-K High School to improve to 9-1 on the year.

Junior Kyle Mazziotti took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:10.75) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.81) for the Cougars. He also joined forces with freshman Jack Ferguson, senior Jimmy Clemente, and freshman AJ Campo de la Vera to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.16.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Mazziotti, senior Zach Houlton, senior Eli Houlton, and junior Egan Rothrock posted a mark of 1:41.19 to come in first place. The 400 freestyle relay of Zach Houlton, Eli Houlton, Clemente, and Ferguson earned top honors with a time of 3:46.46.

Eli Houlton also took first in the 50 freestyle (23.84) and the 100 backstroke (59.88) in the victory. Ferguson was first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.79.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug (LH/H-K/C) boys’ ice hockey squad won a non-conference game and lost a divisional contest in last week’s action. The Trojans are now 9-8-1 overall with a record of 4-4 in SCC/SWC Division II heading into the last week of the regular season.

On Feb. 19, LH/H-K/C bested the Eastern CT Eagles by a 5-4 final in a home game at Northford Ice Pavillion. Three days later, the Trojans took a 4-3 road loss to the East Haven co-op squad at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K traveled to North Branford to face the Thunderbirds in a Shoreline Conference Tournament play-in game last week. The 9th-seeded Cougars lost a 51-44 decision against No. 8 North Branford to put their record at 6-15 on the year.

Earlier in the week, H-K took a 54-39 home loss against Cromwell in its last game of the regular season on Feb. 17.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars lost both of their contests last week to move to 7-11 with two games left in regular-season play.

On Feb. 18, H-K lost at Cromwell by the score of 57-40. Then, on Feb. 21, the Cougars took a 68-56 road loss against the Sport & Medical Sciences Academy.
