The Morgan wrestling team competed at the Class S State Championship at Killingly High School on Feb. 21 and 22. The Huskies earned 11th place overall as a team behind a second-place showing from Louis Bradley and a fifth-place finish from Ethan Reemsnyder.
Bradley earned second in the 138-pound division, and his path included a first-round bye. Then Bradley grabbed a win by pin at the 12-second mark over Braden Joyal of Somers. In the quarterfinal, Bradley defeated Neicko Clapper of Gilbert in an 18-1 technical fall after four minutes. In the semifinal round, Bradley defeated Ben Williams of Haddam-Killingworth by pinfall at the 2:48 mark. Bradley ultimately lost in the final round to Tristan Julian of Stratford by pinfall at the 3:52 mark to earn the silver.
Reemsnyder took fifth place in the 195-division after a first round bye. Then Reemsnyder picked up a win in the second round on a 4-1 decision over Christopher Dinneen of Canton. Reemsnyder lost to Alexander Santini of Plainville in the quarterfinal by a 7-1 decision, and moved into the consolation bracket. In that bracket, Reemsnyder earned a win by pin over Seth Dolson at the 1:09 mark, then defeated Rayyan Ahmed of Rocky Hill by pinfall at the 4:09 mark. In the consolation semis, Reemsnyder lost by pinfall to Donny Shivas of Thomaston-Holy Cross at the 3:08 mark. Reemsnyder defeated Adem Kica of Oxford by a 4-3 position in the fifth-place bout to secure his position.
In the 152, Luke Furches also picked up a first round win for the Huskies, dropping Jadiel Quinones of Montville by pin at the 3:13 mark. Furches lost in the second round to Nicholas Glynn of Haddam-Killingworth by pinfall at the 1:28 mark. Fruches picked up one more win by pin in the consolation bracket over Mark Freedenberg of Canton at 3:55 before losing to David Ives of Stafford by pinfall at 0:59.
David Fortuna claimed a victory in the 170 with a pin of Bailey Sarasin at the 0:33 mark. Fortuna lost a 14-3 major decision to Ioana Cobena in the second round. Fortuna wen into the consolation bracket and only got one more victory by pin over Jacob Marques of Nonnewag.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving squad competed against Classical-University for its final home meet of the season on Feb. 18. The Cougars came away with a 61-59 victory at H-K High School to improve to 9-1 on the year.
Junior Kyle Mazziotti took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:10.75) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.81) for the Cougars. He also joined forces with freshman Jack Ferguson, senior Jimmy Clemente, and freshman AJ Campo de la Vera to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.16.
In the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Mazziotti, senior Zach Houlton, senior Eli Houlton, and junior Egan Rothrock posted a mark of 1:41.19 to come in first place. The 400 freestyle relay of Zach Houlton, Eli Houlton, Clemente, and Ferguson earned top honors with a time of 3:46.46.
Eli Houlton also took first in the 50 freestyle (23.84) and the 100 backstroke (59.88) in the victory. Ferguson was first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.79.
Basketball
The Morgan boys’ basketball squad played a single game last week against Shoreline Conference foe Valley Regional. The Huskies dropped that contest versus the Warriors, and with the defeat, their record moved to 12-6 on the season.
On Feb. 18, the Huskies headed to Deep River where they took on Valley Regional and lost by a score of 59-34. Valley got out to an early 11-3 advantage versus Morgan, and added to that edge to make it 30-15 by halftime. In the second half, the Warriors outscored Morgan, 29-19 to lead to the eventual Huskies’ defeat. Drew Nye provided 10 points in the loss while Rob Zirlis added eight. Alex Fratemico scored six points and Zach Johnson had four.
