The Guilford wrestling team hosted the Class M State Championship last weekend and finished in 11th place out of 25 teams at the meet. The Indians scored 84.5 points as a squad at the Class M Championship, which took place at Guilford High School on Feb. 21 and 22.
Senior Mohammad Halabi took fifth place in the 106-pound weight class for the Indians at states. Halabi defeated Jerry Hill of Bethel just 59 seconds into the fifth-place bout to earn a medal. Sophomore Brent Strand also collected a medal by finishing fifth in the 160-pound division. Strand earned a 10-0 major decision victory versus East Haven’s Fabricio Bugatti in the fifth-place matchup.
Sophomore John Fernandes placed sixth in the 113-pound weight class for the Indians. Fernandes lost a 10-2 major decision against Tristen Jaxon Robledo-Thompson from New London in the fifth-place bout.
Girls’ Basketball
The Indians kicked off their postseason by competing in the SCC Tournament last week. No. 13 seed Guilford took a 39-29 loss at No. 4 East Haven in a first-round matchup on Feb. 20.
Guilford only trailed East Haven by two points with three minutes left in the game, but the Yellowjackets solidified the victory by hitting some free throws down the stretch. The Indians have an overall record of 8-13 as they get ready to compete in the Class L State Tournament this week.
Boys’ Basketball
Guilford was on the road to face divisional opponent Branford for its lone game of the week on Feb. 18. The Indians lost a 57-43 decision to the Hornets to move to 8-10 overall with a mark of 4-2 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division.
Guilford has two games left in the regular season, after which the Indians will compete in the SCC Tournament this week. Guilford will open the SCC Tournament with a first-round game on Thursday, Feb. 27. The quarterfinals are on Saturday, Feb. 29 at Branford High School; the semis take place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Monday, March 2; and the final is at that same site at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Indians earned a non-conference victory and took a pair of losses against divisional opponents last week. Guilford has an overall record of 6-12-1 and is 2-5-1 in SCC/SWC Division II with one game to play in the regular season.
On Feb. 17, Guilford dropped a 12-4 decision against Branford on the road in a divisional game at Northford Ice Pavillion. Two days later, Guilford hosted non-conference squad E.O. Smith-Tolland and prevailed by a 5-2 final at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Then on Feb. 22, Guilford took a 2-1 overtime loss against divisional foe North Haven in a home game.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team hosted Lyman Hall-Coginchaug for a divisional matchup at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Feb. 20. The Warriors won the meet by the final score of 98-80 to improve to 7-2 overall with a record of 5-0 in SCC Division 2 action. GNH faces Sheehan in its regular-season finale before competing at the SCC Championship this week.
Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam a lifetime-best time of 1:15.06 for the Warriors in their win over the Wallingford co-op. Junior Collin Romero turned in a lifetime best of 1:04.51 in the 100 freestyle, while freshman Patrick Cucchiarelli went a lifetime-best of 1:08.94 for the 100 butterfly.
Freshman Joey Gould swam lifetime best in the 500 freestyle (5:38.32) and a season best in the 200 freestyle (2:09.95) for GNH. Also posting season-best times were senior Evan Laughlin in the 50 freestyle (24.58) and 100 freestyle (56.94), junior Daniel Kamen in the 100 freestyle (54.05), and junior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.00).
The Warriors will begin the postseason by competing at the SCC Championship this week. The SCC Diving Championship takes place at Sheehan High School on Friday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m.; the Swimming Qualifier is at the Cheshire Community Pool on Monday, March 2 at 4 p.m.; and the SCC Swimming Championship will be held at Southern Connecticut State University beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4.
