Valley Gymnastics Wins Regular-Season Finale; Indoor Track Competes at States

Gymnastics

The Valley Regional gymnastics team won its final meet of the regular season on Feb. 12. The Warriors faced off against Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray at Flip Flop Gymnastics and earned a 110.9-92.8 win in the contest.

Julie Hartt scored 8.2 on the vault, 6.4 on the bars, 6.4 on the beam, and 7.25 on the floor. Grace Jacaruso earned 8.2 in her vault, 6.65 on the bars, 7.55 on the beam, and 8.1 in her floor routine. Kendra Cika scored a 7.65 on the vault, 5.0 on the Bars, 5.8 on the beam, and 7.6 on the floor. Raquel Farray supplied scored of 6.7 vault, 4.0 Bars, 5.0 on the Beam, and 6.0 on the floor. Isabella Giuliano scored 7.8 on the vault, 5.8 on the bars, 6.0 on beam, and 6.6 on the floor.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Valley Regional girls’ indoor track team competed at the Class S State Championship meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Feb. 14. The Warriors came in 18th place scoring four points as a team at the meet.

The Warriors’ best finish came from their 4x200-meter relay quartet of Lexi Ross, Hanna Babek, Audrey Lenda, and Madeline Jacaruso, who turned in a time of 1:54.70. That finish earned them fourth place and the team its four points.

There were other solid showings at the meet like Madelyn Costello, who cleared a height of 4 feet-10 inches in the high jump for ninth place. In the long jump, Emma King took 12th place in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet-7.5 inches, while Lenda came in 15th place at 14 feet-4 inches. Jacaruso came in 17th place in the 300-meter dash with a time of 46.03 seconds. Costello came in 18th place in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:24.53.

In the 55-meter hurdles, Loretta Cecchini came in 22nd place with a time of 10.28 seconds. Babek came in 34th place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.04 seconds, and Ross was just a split-second behind her at 8.12 seconds and came in 40th place.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Warriors competed at the Class S Meet on Feb. 14 and came in 26th place with a score of three points. Valley’s three points came from senior Ryan Shasha who placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet-10 inches.

Girls’ Basketball

The Warriors played a pair of games last week and lost both of them. The defeats drop Valley’s record to 7-12 on the season.

On Feb. 10, the Warriors dropped 62-41 home contest versus Shoreline Conference foe Cromwell. The Panthers took a 22-17 lead after the first quarter, and then extended that lead to 32-20 by the end of the half. In the second half, Cromwell outscored the Warriors by a margin of 30-21, and Valley lost, 62-41.

Sophomore Salmi Miller led the team in points with 12 to her credit. Junior captain Addi Marchese provided 11 points, while fellow junior captain Alena Crosby provided 9 points. The Warriors also received points from Ava Cunningham (5), Bitzy Klomp (2), and Reagan Brenneman (2).

Two days later, the Warriors headed to Durham to face off with Coginchaug and lost a 57-45 road contest to the Blue Devils. Valley held a small 10-7 lead after the first quarter, and that lead endured to the end of the half at 22-20. In the third quarter, Coginchaug began to break free to take a 34-28 lead after three. The Blue Devils extended that lead winning the fourth quarter, 23-17, and the game, 57-45.

Marchese led the Warriors in scoring with 15 points, while Lily Grow tallied nine points. Crosby scored eight points, and Cunningham provided seven points. Miller, Brenneman, and Siena Schaller had two point apiece.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Morgan-Valley Regional-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH) lost three games last week and is now 7-8 on the season.

On Feb. 11, the Yellowjackets hosted Woodstock Academy and took a 3-1 defeat at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. The game was tied at 1-1 entering the third period, where the Centaurs scored the go-ahead goal before sealing the win with an empty-netter late in the game. Sophomore Cory Benni scored the goal for EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH in the game.

The following evening, the Yellowjackets hosted Hall-Southington for another non-conference matchup and dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime. Senior Alec Speirs and sophomore Duncan Rider netted goals for EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH.

That next game was a rematch for the Yellowjackets, who faced off against Woodstock Academy for the second time on the week on Feb. 15. Woodstock Academy came away with a 4-2 victory at the Pomfret School, breaking open a close game by scoring an empty-net goal in the final minutes. Benni and Speirs had the goals in the game.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme (H-C-VR-OL) girls’ ice hockey team took three defeats last week and now has a record of 5-14 on the year.

On Feb. 9, the Tigers lost to Trumbull-St. Joseph by a 6-3 score at Northford Ice Pavilion. One day later, H-C-VR-OL lost an 8-0 decision against Stamford-Westhill-Staples (S-W-S) in a road game. The Tigers had a rematch against S-W-S when the two teams squared off at Northford Ice Pavilion on Feb. 12. The Tigers took a 3-1 defeat in the contest.
