One week after claiming its fourth-straight Shoreline Conference crown, the Old Saybrook girls’ indoor track team finished second place at the Class S State Championship meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Friday Feb. 14. The Rams posted a total of 60.25 points to earn runner-up honors as a squad.
Senior Grace Hanratty turned in a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:59.85. Cate Coppes also grabbed gold for the Rams with first place in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet-6 inches. Hannah Sumby brought home the bronze in the pole vault with a height of nine feet, and Grace McLaughlin took fourth at 8-6. McLaughlin also tied for third place in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet-10 inches. Autumn Szucs earned third place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.13 seconds. Caitlin Wiley grabbed a sixth-place finish in the 1,600 with a time of 5:29.19
Additionally, Old Saybrook saw great success from its relay teams at States. The 4x800 group of Emily Stratton, Wiley, Anna Brodeur, and Libby Stuart snagged silver with a time of 10:18.34. In the 1,600 sprint medley relay, Szucs, Madelyn Beaudoin, Avery Rueckert, and Hanratty also took second place with a time of 4:33.46. The Rams’ 4x400 quartet of Hanratty, Brodeur, Stratton, and Stuart took fourth place with a time of 4:26.59. Old Saybrook’s 4x200 relay team of Rueckert, Szucs, Coppes, and McLaughlin earned seventh place with a time of 1:55.34.
There were several other notable finishes at the meet. For instance, Coppes took seventh place in the 55 hurdles with a time of 10.30 seconds, and Stratton earned eighth place in the 1,000 with a time of 3:22.27. Libby Stuart came in ninth place in the 1,000 with a time of 3:23.19, and Sumby placed 11th in the long jump with a leap of 14-10. Julia Sultini came in 14th place in the 1,600 with a time of 5:52.25, and Elizabeth Mariol came in 26th place in the shot put with a toss of 27-7.75.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Rams came in fourth place at the Class S State Championship meet with a total of 28 points as a team.
Cooper Luciani grabbed a gold medal in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:26.16. Cody DeAngelo also claimed first place in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet-6 inches.
Old Saybrook 1,600 sprint medley relay quartet of Jack Colella, Nicholas Salemi, Nicholas Rothman, and Luciani snagged silver with a time of 3:48.40.
Old Saybrook had several other noteworthy finishes at the meet. Jacob Schneider took seventh place in the 1,000 with a time of 2:46.81. The Rams also saw Cooper Pavlovich earn seventh place in the shot put with a hurl of 42 feet-7.25 inches.
Jonathan Barnes came in 10th place in the high jump by clearing a height of 5-8, and Barnes also came in 18th place in the long jump with a leap of 18-5.5. Jack Wiley came in 13th place in the 600 with a time of 1:36.04. Anthony Balinskas took 14th in the shot put with a toss of 39-5.25, while Matthew King got 19th with a distance of 37-10.5. Nicholas Salemi came in 24th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash.
Boys’ Basketball
Old Saybrook had two games on the slate last week and came away with a split on the pair. The Rams picked up their first win of the season and hold a record of 1-14.
Old Saybrook got its first win in a 72-71 overtime win at home against Portland on Feb. 14. The Rams took a 17-9 lead in the first quarter, which slightly shrank to a 32-25 lead by halftime. The Highlanders chipped away at Old Saybrook’s edge further by winning the third quarter 17-15. So, with the score at 47-42 in the Rams’ favor entering the fourth, Portland managed to tie the game at 56-56 by the end of regulation. Old Saybrook edged out Portland with a 16-15 overtime period to take the 72-71 victory.
Davis Brown had a huge game sinking four three-pointers and scoring 39 points for the Rams. Mike Almada scored 10 points, and Gino Gallitto and Riley Lawson provided eight points each. Ryan Stratton (5) and Shon Ryan (2) also added points.
Earlier in the week on Feb. 11, Old Saybrook headed to Hartford to face off with Capital Prep and took an 89-58 road loss. Capital Prep posted an early 23-10 advantage in the first quarter, and by then end of the first half, that lead grew to 45-22. The Rams would draw a hair closer by winning the third quarter 15-12, but Capital Prep’s lead was already insurmountable.
Brown led the Rams with 22 points, while Peter Waida and Gallitto each added nine points. Almada and Lawson provided seven points apiece. Stratton (2) and Ryan (2) also got on the scoresheet.
Girls’ Basketball
The Rams played a game last week and took a loss in that contest. With the defeat, Old Saybrook’s record dropped to 2-17 on the season.
On Feb. 14, the Rams headed to Portland where they took a 48-26 road loss against the Highlanders. Portland took a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 25-13 by halftime. Old Saybrook was outscored 23-13 in the second half en route to the 48-26 defeat.
Kayla Holt scored six points in the loss, while Taylor Stone and Taylor Cote added five points each. Beldina Feratovic and Abby Gergeron had three points apiece.
