Jennings Wins the 1,000 for H-K at States; Lewis Has a Huge All-Around Day

Boys’ Indoor Track

One week after winning its second-straight Shoreline Conference title, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ indoor track squad kept the good times rolling with a second-place performance at the Class S State Championship on Feb. 14. The Cougars totaled a team score of 51 points on their way to earning runner-up honors at the state meet, which took place at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Junior Matt Jennings claimed first place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:32.04 for H-K at states. Jennings defeated Jacob Hampton from East Hampton (2:32.64) by less than a second to take the top spot.

The Cougars’ 1,600 sprint medley relay team of junior Aidan Coleman, senior Seth Regan, senior Dmytri Mallon, and Jennings also finished first with a time of 3:45.03, placing ahead of the quartet from Old Saybrook (3:48.40) by more than three seconds.

H-K’s 4x400 relay team of Coleman, senior Luke Sodergren, senior Owen Howes, and Mallon took second place at 3:35.52. The 4x800 relay of sophomore Lucas Kamoen, junior Maxwell Cozean, Coleman, and Freeman placed third (8:44.46), while the 4x200 relay of senior Dalton Modehn, Mallon, Coleman, and Regan finished fourth (1:35.38).

Regan finished seventh in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash with a mark 6.75 seconds and then improved to a 6.68 for fourth place in the finals. Sodergren finished seventh in the prelims of the 55 hurdles at 8.33 and then placed sixth for the finals with a faster time of 8.24.

Sophomore Caleb Freeman finished third in the 3,200 by running a time of 10:05.22. Junior Eamon Sweeney took sixth place in the high jump with a height of 5 feet-10 inches, while junior John Bruder finished sixth for the shot put behind a toss of 42-11.

Girls’ Indoor Track

H-K finished in seventh place with 24 points scored at the Class S State Championship meet last week.

Junior Kedarjah Lewis had a huge meet for the Cougars by placing in three events to score 22 points on the day. Lewis hit a distance of 17 feet-2.25 inches to take second place in the long jump at states. She also finished second in the 300-meter dash by running a time of 42.67 seconds. In the 55-meter dash, Lewis ran a time of 7.37 seconds to take third place in the preliminaries and then came back with a 7.24 in the finals for third place overall.

H-K’s 4x400 relay team featuring Isabel Berardino, senior Julia Callis, sophomore Brianna Minervino, and sophomore Ali Twachtman took fifth place with a time of 10:35.14 at the Class S meet.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars won all three of their contests last week to improve to 7-9 on the year.

On Feb. 10, H-K edged out St. Paul by a 63-62 score in a home game. One day later, the Cougars won a 75-66 double-overtime decision over Coginchaug at home. H-K closed out its perfect week by posting an 81-70 home win over North Branford Feb. 14.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K lost three games last week to move to 6-13 this season.

The Cougars took a 60-26 road loss against Coginchaug on Feb. 10. The next day, H-K lost a 54-34 decision at Old Lyme. Then on Feb. 13, the Cougars dropped a 34-29 contest to North Branford in a road game.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug (LH/H-K/C) boys’ ice hockey squad qualified for the Division II State Tournament by beating East Catholic last week. The Trojans, who also took two defeats, have an overall record of 8-7-1 on the season.

On Feb. 10, LH/H-K/C skated to a 3-1 road win against East Catholic to make states. Two days later, the Trojans lost to SCC/SWC Division II opponent Branford by a 2-1 final at Northford Ice Pavilion. LH/H-K/C finished the week by taking a 6-5 loss to Sheehan at Wesleyan University on Feb. 15.

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray gymnastics team competed against Valley Regional in its regular-season finale at Flip-Flop Gymnastics last week. The Cougars took a 110.90-92.80 defeat to the Warriors on Feb. 12.
