The Guilford boys’ basketball team qualified for postseason play for the fourth time in five years earning a 60-50 home victory versus Platt Tech on Feb. 13. The Indians also took two losses last week and are now 8-9 overall with a record of 4-2 in the Quinnipiac Division of the SCC.
On Feb. 11, Guilford took a Shelton 59-49 defeat at Shelton in a divisional game on Feb. 11. Senior Chris Cahill 27 points for the Indians in the loss.
Two nights later, Guilford defeated non-conference opponent Platt Tech by the score of 60-50 to qualify for both the SCC Tournament and the Division II State Tournament. Cahill scored 21 points for Guilford in the victory. Brayden Santa Barbara scored 13 points, and fellow senior John Petonito had 10 points.
In its last game of the week, the Indians dropped a 56-55 decision at Cheshire on Feb. 15. Cahill scored 26 points, and Santa Barbara netted 18 points on the night.
Gymnastics
Freshman Ella Esposito earned All-SCC accolades when she represented Guilford gymnastics by competing at the SCC Championship last week.
Esposito finished in sixth place in the all-around with a score of 30.6 on behalf of the Indians in the SCC meet, which was held at Jonathan Law High School on Feb. 13. Esposito took fifth place on the floor with a score of 8.1 to highlight her overall performance at SCCs.
Wrestling
The Indians took fifth place as a team at the SCC Championship by scoring 101 points at Mercy High School on Feb. 15.
John Fernandes advanced to the title bout of the 113-pound weight class for Guilford at the SCC meet. Fernandes lost to Xavier’s Michael Rapuano by pinfall at the 1:03 mark of the final to finish in second place for the 113 division. Christopher Murphy reached the championship match the 170-pound division for the Indians, losing a 7-1 decision to Ryan Miner from Xavier to take second place.
Anthony Bomgardner claimed third place in the 126-pound weight class by pinning Foran’s Tanish Joshi just 39 seconds into the consolation final. Robert Masotti finished third at 152 with a 6-4 decision victory over Nasjir Patterson of New Haven in their consolation final.
Additionally at SCCs, Mohammad Halabi finished fourth in the 106-pound division, Kyle Putnam placed fourth at 132 pounds, and Brent Strand took fourth place in the 160-pound weight class for Guilford.
Earlier in the week, the Indians took a 44-26 home loss to SCC Division I opponent Branford in their regular-season finale on Feb. 12. Halabi and Fernandes prevailed via pinfall at 106 and 113 pounds, respectively, for the Indians, who went 16-4 during the regular season this year.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
Guilford is peaking at the right time this season, having earned wins in three of its four contests last week. The Indians improved to 11-5 overall with a record of 6-2 in SCC play.
On Feb. 10, the Indians defeated Fairfield Ludlowe-Warde by an 8-3 score at the Wonderland of Ice. Kimberly Evans scored three goals and had an assist for Guilford, while Maddie Epke contributed two goals and an assist.
Two days later, the Indians notched an 8-4 victory over Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall 8-4 at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. Epke, a sophomore, tallied a team-high five goals and earned her 100th career point for Guilford in the win.
On Feb. 13, Guilford defeated Hand-Conginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme by an 8-2 final in a home game at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Epke scored three goals, and Audrey Rowen netted a pair of goals.
In its final contest of the week, Guilford took a 2-1 loss to Avon-Southington-RHAM-Newington-Lewis Mills-Wethersfield at Newington Ice Arena.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Guilford lost an SCC game and a non-conference contest in its matchups last week. The Indians are now 5-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in SCC/SWC Division II.
On Feb. 12, the Indians dropped a 4-1 decision to divisional opponent Hand in a home game at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Three days later, Guilford lost to Farmington Valley by a 9-2 score in non-conference action at Avon Old Farms.
Girls’ Indoor Track
Senior Clara Wiesler came in sixth place in the 3,200-meter run for Guilford at the Class L State Championship on Feb. 15. Wiesler’s performance gave the Indians a point that put them in 22nd place at Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Wiesler ran a time of 12:02.21 on her way to finishing sixth for the 3,200 at states. Also in the 3,200, Julia Anthony finished 13th (12:25.81), Katrina Muhs placed 15th (12:27.93), and Olivia Skapczynski came in 17th place (12:41.89) for the Indians.
Boys’ Indoor Track
Guilford was represented by a handful of athletes at last week’s Class L State Championship meet.
The Indians’ best finish came in the 4x800 relay, where their team of Justin Shiffrin, Cameron Hubbard, Mckendry Eschinger, and Thomas Gregory took seventh place with a time of 8:49.21. Shiffrin was also 12th in the 1,600 with a mark of 4:50.22 and placed 13th in the 3,200 at 10:23.67.
Gregory finished 22nd (1:32.89) for the 600, and Hubbard came in 24th (1:34.27) for Guilford. The Indians’ 4x400 relay of senior Ben Crair, Shiffrin, junior Tanner Updyke, and Hubbard placed 21st with a time of 4:01.29.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team was on the road to face Foran-Law for a divisional matchup last week. GNH claimed a 96-79 win versus the Milford co-op at Foran High School to raise its record to 6-2 overall with a mark of 4-0 in SCC Division 2.
Freshman Aiden Cohen swam a lifetime-best time of 53.90 seconds in the 100 freestyle for the Warriors in the victory. Junior Joe O’Connor posted a lifetime-best score of 187.60 points for the diving competition, while freshman Christian Butler finished with a lifetime-best total of 185.70 points.
Junior Daniel Kamen swam a season-best time of 2:14.44 in the 200 individual medley for GNH. Also turning in season-best marks were junior Raymond Lewis in the 50 freestyle (29.73), sophomore Hethon Foster in the 100 butterfly (54.02), sophomore Miguel Pearce for the 100 freestyle (57.97), senior Stephen Borrelli in the 500 freestyle (5:39.86), and junior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.25).
Girls’ Fencing
The Indians’ fencing program hosted the Guilford Invitational varsity fencing event at Guilford High School on Feb. 8. The Guilford girls’ team picked up multiple victories while fencing foil, épée, and saber at the invitational. Foil fencer Lindsey Smith went undefeated against all five schools that the Indians competed against in the meet.
Guilford started off by recording a 19-8 win against Hand, keyed by victories from its foil (6-3), épée (6-3), and saber (7-2) squads. In addition to Smith, Sydney Provencher went undefeated for the foil team. Shayla Flynn was undefeated in saber, and Julia Gangemi went undefeated for the épée team.
Guilford went on to post a 24-3 victory versus Fairfield in its next matchup. The saber team prevailed 9-0 with strong performances from Flynn, Camille Gipson, and Adella Cho. Smith and Provencher went undefeated to help the foil team win a 7-2 decision, while Gangemi was also undefeated again in an 8-1 win for the épée squad.
In their next contest, the Indians claimed a 17-10 victory over the Amity-Darien co-op. The épée team recorded a 9-0 shutout as Gangemi, Grace Banning, and Valerie Qiang won all of their bouts. Smith’s perfect performance spurred a 7-2 win for the foil team.
Boys’ Fencing
Guilford hit the strip to participate in the Guilford Invitational that was held in its home gym on Feb. 8.
The Indians took a 17-10 loss against Hand in their opening contest. Adin Jennings won all of his bouts to help the épée team claim a 5-4 victory.
Guilford then went up against Fairfield and prevailed by the final score of 17-10. Jennings and Jack Greiner swept their bouts to help the épée squad get a 7-2 win. The Indians’ saber team earned an 8-1 victory.
Guilford dropped a 19-8 decision to Amity-Darien in its next matchup.
