Senior Mackenzie Glenn took fourth place in the long jump for the North Branford girls’ indoor track team at the Class S State Championship on Feb. 14. Glenn’s performance resulted in four points that put the T-Birds in 18th place at Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Glenn reached a distance of 16 feet-9.75 inches on her way to finishing fourth in the long jump at states. She had previously won the event for the second-straight season at the Shoreline Conference Championship on Feb. 8.
North Branford’s 1,600-meter sprint medley relay of junior Nadia Becker, Glenn, sophomore Marissa Raffone, and junior Riley Kendall finished seventh with a time of 4:44.34 at the Class S meet. Becker also came in 13th place for the 55-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 7.80 seconds.
Boys’ Indoor Track
Senior Joe DeLucia scored a point for the T-Birds by placing sixth in the 600-meter run at last week’s Class S State Championship. North Branford finished in 28th place at the meet by virtue of DeLucia’s performance.
DeLucia ran a time of 1:29.59 on his way to taking sixth place in the 600 at states. He had finished fourth in the event at the Shoreline Conference Championship during the previous week.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
North Branford picked up its first win of the season by earning a 6-5 overtime victory versus Amity at Northford Ice Pavilion on Feb. 12. With the game tied 5-5 heading into overtime, senior captain Joe Carbone put a shot behind the Amity goalie to give the Thunderbirds a 6-5 victory.
On Feb. 15, North Branford took a 3-0 home loss to Staples to move to 1-14-1 on the campaign.
Girls’ Basketball
North Branford took on Morgan and Haddam-Killingworth last week and earned a split of the set. The T-Birds have a record of 9-10 for the season.
North Branford played a road game against Morgan on Feb. 10 and lost by a 47-25 score.
Three days later, the Thunderbirds hosted Haddam-Killingworth and claimed a 34-29 victory. Senior Lily Blomster helped the T-Birds get out to an early 16-4 lead by scoring 10 points during the first quarter. The Cougars battled back, tying the game at 24-24 in the fourth. Bolstered by clutch free throws from sophomores Hanna Senerchia and Marissa Ricardo, North Branford was able to pull away for the five-point victory. Senior Julia Ricardo scored seven points for the Thunderbirds in the win.
Boys’ Basketball
The T-Birds lost two contests last week and are now 6-10 this year.
On Feb. 12, North Branford dropped a 59-33 decision to Morgan at home. On Feb. 14, the T-Birds lost to Haddam-Killingworth by an 81-70 final on the road.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team was on the road to face Foran-Law for a divisional matchup last week. GNH claimed a 96-79 win versus the Milford co-op at Foran High School to raise its record to 6-2 overall with a mark of 4-0 in SCC Division 2.
Freshman Aiden Cohen swam a lifetime-best time of 53.90 seconds in the 100 freestyle for the Warriors in the victory. Junior Joe O’Connor posted a lifetime-best score of 187.60 points for the diving competition, while freshman Christian Butler finished with a lifetime-best total of 185.70 points.
Junior Daniel Kamen swam a season-best time of 2:14.44 in the 200 individual medley for GNH. Also turning in season-best marks were junior Raymond Lewis in the 50 freestyle (29.73), sophomore Hethon Foster in the 100 butterfly (54.02), sophomore Miguel Pearce for the 100 freestyle (57.97), senior Stephen Borrelli in the 500 freestyle (5:39.86), and junior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.25).
