The Morgan wrestling team had a busy week that saw junior Louis Bradley claim first place in the 138-pound weight class at the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) Championship. The Huskies also clinched a share of the SCC Division 2 title with a win over New Haven in their regular-season finale earlier in the week. Morgan ended up with a 12-7 overall record to go with a mark of 5-1 in SCC Division 2, sharing the title with Fairfield Prep and Notre Dame-West Haven.
The Huskies started the week with hosting a dual meet against New Haven and claimed a 42-35 home win on Feb. 12.
Morgan’s victories began with Kevin Hicks winning by pin at the 2:45 mark in the 120-pound division. Josh Fragola of the 132 grabbed a win by pin with a time of 4:57. Louis Bradley claimed the win in the 145 with a pin at the 3:58 mark.
On Feb. 15, Morgan competed in the SCC Championship and came in 12th place with a total of 33 points.
Louis Bradley claimed first place in the 138-pound division. His path to victory included a first-round bye, and then a win by pin at the 3:11 mark in the quarterfinal. Bradley also earned a win by pinfall at 1:09 in the semifinal. In the final bout, Bradley won by pin after 0:50.
Also earning a victory at the meet was Ethan Reemsnyder. Reemsnyder did battle in the 195-division and earned a win by pin at the 5:18 mark, but then he lost his bout in the semifinal round.
Girls’ Basketball
The Morgan girls’ basketball team picked up three wins in as many games last week. The three victories improved the Huskies’ record to 14-5 on the year.
On Feb. 10, Morgan hosted North Branford and earned a 47-25 home victory over the Thunderbirds. The Huskies got out to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 32-12 by the end of the second. The Thunderbirds were unable to draw any closer the rest of the way, as Morgan outscored North Branford 15-13 in the second half.
Leah McComiskey led the Huskies in scoring with 14 points to go with 10 rebounds, seven blocks, and five steals. Rachel Lehn provided 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Alyse Olcott aadded two points, eight boards, three blocks, two assists and a steal, while Catie Donadio scored 10 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Katie Martin (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Caeley Ayer (4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks) also contributioned to the win.
Three days later, the Huskies made their way to Cromwell where they picked up a narrow 49-45 road win against the Panthers. Cromwell took an early lead with a 14-9 first quarter, and by the end of the half, Cromwell was up 24-18. Morgan made some adjustments at halftime and narrowed the gap to 39-37 by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, Morgan took the lead for good with a 12-6 effort in the final frame en route to the 49-45 win.
Donadio led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points to go with 17 rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. McComiskey added 12 points, 15 boards, five blocks, five assists, and two steals, while Ayer supplied six points, 11 rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Morgan also received support in the stat sheet from Martin (9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block) and Lehn (9 points, 3 three rebounds). Alex Kelly had two rebounds and a block.
On Feb. 15, Morgan had another close victory with a 42-39 home win over Guilford. Morgan had the early 13-11 advantage after the first and led 20-19 at the half. Guilford took a 28-26 edge after three, and the Huskies prevailed with a 16-11 fourth quarter for the 42-39 win.
Donadio had 19 points, while Ayer added nine and McComiskey supplied eight. Lehn and Martin posted three points apiece.
Boys’ Basketball
The Morgan boys’ basketball team played a pair of games last week and won both of them. With the victories, the Huskies’ record improved to 12-5 on the season.
On Feb. 12, Morgan headed to North Branford and claimed a 59-33 road win over the Thunderbirds. The Huskies got out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and then added to that lead with a 15-7 second quarter. With a 31-17 edge heading into the third, Morgan outscored the Thunderbirds 28-16 in the second half en route to the 59-33 win.
Rob Zirlis and Jason Cohen led the Huskies in scoring with 16 points apiece. Zach Johnson added seven points, while Andrew Nye provided six points. Other scorers included Cam Carlson (5), Connor Duffy (3), Alex Fratemico (2), Josh Bardinelli (2), and Dom Cacopardo (2).
On Feb. 14, the Huskies hosted Cromwell and grabbed a 55-40 win over the Panthers. Cromwell took a narrow 9-8 lead after the first quarter, but Morgan upped the ante on both sides of the ball with a 15-4 second quarter for a 23-13 halftime edge. Cromwell pulled to within a single score after three quarters for a 33-31 Morgan lead. The Huskies dominated the fourth quarter to the tune of 22-9 and ultimately took the 55-40 win.
Johnson led the scoring attack with 18 points, and Zirlis had 14 points to his credit. Cohen scored seven points, while Duffy (6), Carlson (6), and Nye (4) all provided points, as well.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Morgan girls’ indoor track team saw several of its athletes compete at the Class S State Championship meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 14.
The 4x200-meter relay quartet of Kayla Pollard, Logan Pernal, Colleen Edwards, and Carley Schmidt claimed eighth place with a time of 1:55.83. Maura Kelly came in 13th place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:27.40. Pollard finished in 19th place in the 300-meter dash with a time of 46.62 seconds. Pollard also came in 32nd place in the 55-meter dash preliminaries with her time of 8.03 seconds.
Boys’ Indoor Track
A handful of Morgan athletes headed to the Class S State Championship to compete on Feb. 14. Michael Monty came in 12th place in the 55-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 8.77 seconds. Additionally, the 4x200 relay squad of Alex Gallardo, Chayse Lofgren, Fabio Silveira, and Ryan Warner took 15th place with a time of 1:41.63.
