Francois Wins Long Jump at States; East Haven Wrestling Takes 2nd in SCCs

Girls’ Indoor Track

Junior Kisha Francois took first place in the long jump for the East Haven girls’ indoor track team at the Class M State Championship last week. The Yellowjackets finished in 11th place with 19 points scored at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 15.

Francois reached a distance of 17 feet-3.25 inches to edge out Mariella Schweitzer of Barlow (17-3) for the state title in the long jump. Francois also finished second in the 55-meter dash by running a time of 7.46 seconds in the final heat. She was first for the preliminaries at 7.52.

Previously, Francois had won the long jump at the SCC West Sectional Championship and then finished second in the event, as well as the 55-meter dash, at the SCC Championship.

East Haven’s 4x200 relay of Francois, junior Samantha Franceschi, senior Edith Kwadan-naab, and freshman Adriana Franceschi took sixth place with a time of 1:51.39 in the state meet. Samantha Franchesi finished 13th in the 55 prelims (7.81) and also placed 26th in the 300 (46.31). Adriana Franceschi was 41st in the 55 prelims with a time of 8.10.

Kwadan-naab finished 15th in the 55-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 9.93. Freshman Jessica Urban came in 22nd place with a 10.26.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Yellowjackets sent a few athletes to compete at the Class M State Championship last week.

Senior Ian Loehmann finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.54 seconds for East Haven. Junior Radames Figueroa finished 15th in 55 hurdles with a mark of 8.66.

East Haven’s 4x200 relay of senior Nathan Santos, junior Frank Piscitelli, senior Dante Sigular, and senior Andrew Jiminez finished 19th by recording a time of 1:41.17. Santos also finished 21st in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet-5.5 inches and was 40th for the 55-meter dash prelims at 7.22.

Wrestling

The East Haven wrestling team posted a second-place performance at the SCC Championship on Feb. 15. The Yellowjackets scored 146.5 points as a team on their way to earning runner-up honors at SCCs.

Junior Dominic Milano took first place in the 106-pound division for East Haven by pinning Milford’s Antonio Madero at the 5:28 mark of their championship bout. Senior Vincenzo Bunce placed third in the 195-pound weight class by pinning Phillip Boyles from Milford at the 2:16 mark of the consolation final.

Senior Matt DiVito (126), senior Alec DiVito (132), and junior Tanner DiVito (138) all took second place in their respective weight classes at the SCC meet. Junior Gunner Horton followed suit with a second-place finish in the 220-pound division.

Senior Hugo Ortiz finished fourth in the 145-pound weight class, while junior Danny Clough took home fourth place in the 170-pound division for East Haven.

Prior to the SCC Championship, East Haven traveled to Woodbridge to face Amity for their final regular-season matchup on Feb. 12. The Yellowjackets prevailed by a 47-34 score to put their record at 18-6 overall.

Girls’ Basketball

East Haven finished off its regular season by gaining a split of two games last week. The Yellowjackets are heading into the postseason with a record of 13-7.

On Feb. 11, the Yellowjackets played a road game against Mercy and lost by a 62-43 score. Returning home on Feb. 13, the Yellowjackets claimed a 47-44 victory versus Amity to finish with a record of 7-1 in the SCC Hammonasset Division this year. East Haven had recently clinched the division title, its fifth in the last five seasons, during the previous week’s action.

Boys’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets had two home games last week and took a pair of defeats. East Haven has a record of 4-13 on the year.

On Feb. 11, East Haven dropped a 78-55 decision against Notre Dame-West Haven. Three days later, the Yellowjackets lost to Sheehan by a 75-60 final.

During the previous week’s action, East Haven posted a 51-30 win over Lyman Hall on Feb. 7 and then took a 78-55 defeat versus Notre Dame-West Haven on Feb. 11.

Junior Nick Furino scored 15 points for East Haven in the Lyman Hall game. Junior Ian Reynolds scored 12 points, while sophomore Shea Carasone had 11 points.

Furino netted 19 points for the Yellowjackets against Notre Dame. Reynolds and Carasone scored 16 and 13, points, respectively.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-North Branford-East Haven (B-NB-EH) girls’ ice hockey team earned a tie and took a defeat while playing two road games last week. The Wings have a record of 3-13-2 with two games remaining in the regular season.

On Feb. 12, the Wings lost a 3-1 decision against SCC opponent Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug at the Sports Center of Connecticut. Two days later, B-NB-EH battled Mercy-Northwest Catholic to a 3-3 tie at Champions Skating Center.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team was on the road to face Foran-Law for a divisional matchup last week. GNH claimed a 96-79 win versus the Milford co-op at Foran High School to raise its record to 6-2 overall with a mark of 4-0 in SCC Division 2.

Freshman Aiden Cohen swam a lifetime-best time of 53.90 seconds in the 100 freestyle for the Warriors in the victory. Junior Joe O’Connor posted a lifetime-best score of 187.60 points for the diving competition, while freshman Christian Butler finished with a lifetime-best total of 185.70 points.

Junior Daniel Kamen swam a season-best time of 2:14.44 in the 200 individual medley for GNH. Also turning in season-best marks were junior Raymond Lewis in the 50 freestyle (29.73), sophomore Hethon Foster in the 100 butterfly (54.02), sophomore Miguel Pearce for the 100 freestyle (57.97), senior Stephen Borrelli in the 500 freestyle (5:39.86), and junior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.25).
