Westbrook’s Track Teams Compete at Conference Meet

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Westbrook girls Indoor track team competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship meet at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 8. Three relays scored points for the Knights.

The 4x800-meter relay quartet of Samantha Sharpe, Myan Nguyen, Cierra Brundage and Marguerite Bartlett finished in eighth place with a time of 12:57. The 4x400 crew of Kiley McCarthy, Samantha Sharpe, Myan Nguyen and Cierra Brundage finished in eighth place with a mark of 5:42.

The 4x200 of Delaney Belcourt, Halley Pierson, Mackenzie True and Elizabeth Gallagher finished in eighth place, as well.

Mackenzie True finished in ninth place in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet-2 inches, and True will also compete in the long jump at the Class S State Tournament on Friday, Feb 14th. Brooke Neri had a season-best time of 3:37 in the 1,000, finishing in seventh place.

Gallagher turned in personal records in both of her individual events. She competed in the 55 and ran a personal best of 7.79 seconds and finishing in fourth place. In the 300, Gallagher finished in third place with a new personal mark of 44.78 seconds. Her previous season best was 45.01.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Westbrook boys’ indoor track team had a few notable finishes at the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet on Feb. 8.

The 4x400 squad of Cole Strzelecki, Hever Gomez, Logan Dazey, and Michael Valiante scored two points for the team, finishing in seventh place with a time of 4:33.

Gregory Araya ran a 24-second personal record in the 3,200. He ran the event for the first time two weeks ago in a time of 12:06. He had the top finish for all of the boys individual events, finishing in ninth place with a time of 11:42.

Boys’ Basketball

The Knights had just a single game against Old Lyme on the slate last week and took a loss in the contest. The defeat drops Westbrook’s record to 4-9 on the season.

On Feb. 4, the Knights headed to Old Lyme for a road contest against the Wildcats. The Wildcats outscored Westbrook 22-11 in the first frame, and the Knights trailed 45-22 by the half. By the third quarter, Westbrook’s deficit grew to 76-32 en route to the 98-50 loss to Old Lyme.

Joey Caslin led the Knights in scoring with 14 followed by Brenden Engles with 13 points. Sammy Freeman (8) and Jack Naccarato (6) also provided some points for the Knights.

Girls’ Basketball

Westbrook played a game against Old Lyme last week and lost. The Knights’ record fell to 4-12 on the season with the defeat.

On Feb. 3, Westbrook hosted Old Lyme and lost a 54-31 home contest versus the Wildcats.
