Steffen Wins the 3,200 for Hand at SCCs; Girls’ Hoops, Boys’ Hockey Keep Piling Up Victories

Girls’ Indoor Track

Junior Anna Steffen claimed first place in the 3,200-meter run to help the Hand girls’ indoor track squad finish fourth at last week’s SCC Championship. The Tigers scored a total of 49 points on their way to taking fourth place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7.

Steffen ran a time of 11:50.39 to earn first place in the 3,200 at SCCs, finishing three seconds ahead of runner-up Julia Antony of Guilford (11:53.40). Steffen also took second place in the 1,600-meter run by crossing the finish line with a time of 5:22.44. She had won both the 1,600 and the 3,200 at the SCC East Sectional Championship during the previous week.

One after winning the 1,000-meter run at sectionals, senior Chloe Thompson finished second for the event in the SCC Championship. Thompson timed in with a mark of 3:14.27 to secure runner-up honors in the 1,000. Freshman Adelynn Arroyo was right behind Thompson by taking third place in a time of 3:14.94.

The Tigers’ 4x800 relay featuring junior Morgan Combs, freshman Madeline Coulis, Arroyo, and Thompson finished in second place by recording a time of 10:13.61. The 4x400 relay of sophomore Meryl Sullivan, freshman Julia Coric, freshman Maya Howard, and Arroyo came in fourth place (4:19.19), while the 1,600 sprint medley relay of sophomore Kyra Matkin, junior Olivia Henkel, Combs, and Thompson finished fifth (4:40.53).

Combs also took fifth place in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:44.79. Sullivan finished sixth in the 600 at 1:46.04.

Girls’ Basketball

The Tigers played three games last week and came away with three victories to improve to 15-3 entering the last week of the regular season. Hand defeated Amity, Cheshire, and Hillhouse in last week’s action.

Hand started off its week by earning a 60-45 road win versus Amity on Feb. 3.

Two days later, the Tigers hosted Cheshire and claimed a 63-41 victory in an SCC Quinnipiac Division game. Hand moved to 6-0 in divisional play with the win.

Senior Sara Wohlgemuth scored 15 points to lead the Tigers to their win over Cheshire. Sophomore Brooke Salutari had nine points, and junior Hadley Houghton scored eight points for Hand. Junior Julia Kuhn scored seven points, while freshman Olivia Schofield contributed six points in the victory. Junior Maddie Thomas and sophomore Sophia Coppola added five points apiece for Head Coach Tim Tredwell’s club.

Then on Feb. 7, Hand notched a 59-52 victory against Hillhouse in another home game.

Boys’ Basketball

Hand took three defeats in last week’s matchups and is now 6-10 on the season.

On Feb. 3, the Tigers dropped a 48-42 decision to Shelton in a home game. Then on Feb. 6, the Tigers hosted Amity and lost to the Spartans by a 67-56 final. The very next day, Hand took a 49-40 road loss against Wilbur Cross in a road game.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

Hand earned two wins and a tie while playing a trio of divisional games at Northford Ice Pavilion last week. The Tigers have an overall record of 12-1-1 on the year.

Hand hosted Cheshire and battled the Rams to a 1-1 draw on Feb. 1. Four days later, the Tigers took on Watertown-Pomperaug for another divisional matchup and posted a 6-0 shutout. Then on Feb. 8, Hand earned a 2-0 win against Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug to improve to 5-0-1 in its SCC/SWC Division II contests.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme (H-C-VR-OL) girls’ ice hockey team earned its fifth win of the year when the Tigers defeated the Masuk co-op squad last week. On Feb. 7, the Tigers posted a 3-2 victory over Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton Hall-Shelton at the Sports Center of Connecticut to improve to 5-11 overall with a record of 2-5 in the SCC.

Prior to the victory, H-C-VR-OL took two defeats earlier in the week. On Feb. 1, the Tigers lost to Suffield-Ellington-Enfield-Granby-Canton-Windsor-Northwestern by a 3-0 score at Northford Ice Pavilion. Then on Feb. 5, H-C-VR-OL took a 6-0 road loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug in an SCC game at the Sports Center of Connecticut.

Cheerleading

The Tigers’ cheerleading team competed at the SCC Championship that was held at North Haven High School on Jan. 1. Hand finished in sixth place by posting a score of 85.85 at the conference meet. Izzy Carusone, Gina Ciotti, and Emily VanKirk earned All-SCC honors on behalf of Head Coach Licia Ciotti’s squad.

Gymnastics

Hand moved to 8-3 on the season by gaining a split of its Senior Night meet at Polson Middle School last week. The Tigers finished with a score of 126.9 to edge out South Windsor (126.85), while taking a loss against Stonington (136.4).

Senior Carly Anna-Barba posted an overall score of 32.3 that included an 8.4 on vault and an 8.35 on floor for the Tigers. Junior Kayla Cataldo finished with an all-around score of 31.15, scoring an 8.2 on floor and an 8.1 for the vault. Freshman Morgan McMahon recorded solid scores on floor (8.4), vault (8.3), and beam (8.1) on her way to scoring an all-around total of 31.15. Sophomore Riley Caruso recorded an all-around score of 30.3 that included a mark of 8.05 on vault. Head Coach Kelly Smith also noted that sophomore Aly Gabrynowicz competed on the beam for the first time, while fellow Riley Kilbourn performed her first floor routine for the Tigers.
