The Morgan girls’ basketball squad played three games last week and picked up a pair of wins in their effort. With these results the Huskies moved to 11-5 on the season.
On Feb. 3, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth and took a 55-31 win over the Cougars. The game was close in the first quarter with Morgan creating a 11-9 lead in the frame, but the Huskies pulled away in the second with a 17-5 effort leading to a 28-14 advantage by halftime. H-K attempted to work their way back into the game with a solid third quarter to make it 34-25, but Morgan stepped up in the fourth quarter scoring 21 points on its way to a 55-31 win.
Leah McComiskey led the team with 20 points and also supplied 18 rebounds and seven blocks, and Catie Donadio provided 16 points to go with 12 rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Caeley Ayer had four points to go with six assists and five steals.
Three days later, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and lost a 48-39 home contest versus the Blue Devils. Coginchaug played stifling defense in the first half only allowing nine points from Morgan compared to its 26. The Huskies tried to play tough and get back into the game in the second half, but couldn’t muster the full comeback and lost 48-39.
Donadio had 21 points, while Rachel Lehn added eight points. McComiskey provided seven points.
On Feb. 8, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats in a 38-32 home contest.
Boys’ Basketball
The Morgan boys’ basketball squad played two games this week and split the pair. The Huskies’ record moved to 10-5 on the season with the results from the slate.
On Feb. 4, Morgan lost a tight 65-63 road contest versus Haddam-Killingworth. H-K got out to an early 19-15 after the first quarter, but Morgan took the lead by a score of 36-33 at halftime. Morgan created some distance in the third quarter, and led 52-47 heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, Haddam-Killingworth outscored the Huskies 18-10 to take the 65-63 victory.
Alex Fratemico led Morgan with 17 points, and Jason Cohen added 15 points. Connor Duffy provided 11 points, Rob Zirlis scored eight points, and Cam Carlson scored seven points. Andrew Nye put up five points.
Three days later, the Huskies picked up 64-53 road win over Congchaug. Morgan came out on a mission with an 18-4 first quarter effort. Coginchaug responded with a 20-10 second quarter to reduce the Huskies lead to 28-24 at halftime. Morgan led 43-38 through three quarters, and the Huskies kept the Blue Devils at bay in the fourth and even extended the lead on their way to the 64-53 victory.
Nye had a big game with 20 points, while Zirlis added 17 points. Cohen supplied 15 points to round out the top scorers for Morgan. Fratemico (6), Gavin Krott (4), and Duffy (2) also provided some offense.
Wrestling
Morgan had four bouts last week and split the set. With these results, the Huskies move to a 6-4 overall record with a 4-1 record within the SCC Division 2.
On Feb. 4, Morgan lost a 39-38 dual meet on the road versus Division 2 opponent Fairfield Prep. Morgan’s victories came from Kyle Carse in the 113-pound weight class who earned a win by pin at 1:23. In the 120, Kevin Hicks earned a win by pin at the 2:54 mark. Evan Baptista won his bout in the 120 with an 8-7 decision, and Josh Fragola grabbed a 18-3 victory in the 132 class.
Louis Bradley picked up a win in the 145, and Jordan Armstrong took the 182 with a pin at the 1:44 mark.
On Feb. 8, the Huskies dual meets versus multiple schools hosted at Granby Memorial. Morgan earned victories over Granby (54-30) and Derby (60-21), but lost a decision against Canton (39-33).
Versus Granby, Bradley won his bout in the 138 class by pin at the 0:58 mark. David Fortuna earned a win by pinfall at the 1:14 mark in the 160 class. In the 170, Ryan Hromadka grabbed a win by pin at 1:50.
Against Derby, Ethan Reemsnyder earned a pinfall victory in the 195-pound class at the 1:09 mark. IN the bout against Canton, Luke Furches in the 152 class won by pinfall after 0:42. Reemsnyder did double duty and picked up a 9-5 victory by decision in the 195.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Morgan girls’ indoor track team competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet at Floyd Little athletic Center on Feb. 8. The Huskies saw some quality finishes throughout the roster. The highest finish came from senior Maura Kelly who earned fifth place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:25.57.
The Huskies’ relay groups had impressive finishes including the third-place 4x200 quartet of Logan Pernal, Kayla Pollard, Colleen Edwards and Carley Schmidt with a time of 1:56.03. Morgan’s 1,600 sprint medley relay group of Pernal, Schmidt, Edwards, and Kelly came in eighth place with a time of 5:19.51. Pollard also took eighth in the 300 with a time of 46.79 seconds.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Huskies boys’ indoor track squad also had some nice performances at the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet. The 1,600 sprint medley relay quartet of Fabio Siliveira, Alex Gallardo, Ryan Warner, and Chayse Lofgren earned fourth place with a time of 4:09.99. The same grouping also teamed up for the 4x200 relay and came in fifth place with a time of 1:40.93.
As far as individual finishes, Gallardo came in seventh place in the 55 with a time of 7.27 seconds.
Gymnastics
The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray (H-K/M/H-R) gymnastics team competed against Mercy and Valley Regional in a tri-meet on Feb. 6, after which H-K/M/H-R participated in the Shoreline Conference Championship meet the following day.
H-K/M/H-R finished with a score of 63.05 in its meet versus Mercy and Valley Regional at Flip-Flop Gymnastics. Mercy posted a total of 124.80, while Valley tallied a score of 112.70 on the evening.
On Feb. 7, H-K/M/H-R competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship at ABC Gymnastics. The Cougars came in third place by scoring 62.85 points at the meet.
