Lewis and Lester Win Conference Titles for H-K; Gagliardi Competes at Shoreline Gymnastics Meet

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ indoor track team saw a pair of first-place finishes and a slew of other stellar performances when the Cougars competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship last week. The meet took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 8.

Junior Kedarjah Lewis took first place in the 300-meter dash, while fellow junior Gabrielle Lester won shot put for H-K at Shorelines. Lewis ran a time of 42.67 seconds on her way to placing first for the 300. Lester earned top honors in the shot with a toss of 30 feet-7 inches.

Lewis also finished second in the 55-meter dash for the Cougars. Lewis timed in at 7.55 seconds for second place in the preliminaries and then came back with a 7.45 for second in the finals.

H-K’s 4x800 relay of senior Julia Callis, freshman Isabel Berardino, sophomore Charlotte Selmer, and sophomore Ali Twatchman finished in second place (10:53.26). The 1,600 sprint medley relay of senior Rebecca Fisher, sophomore Ly-Linh Criscuolo, sophomore Brianna Minverino, and Callis took fourth place (4:50).

Junior Meara Bodak finished third in the 1,600 (5:46.37) and also came in third place for the 3,200 (13:03.58). Sophomore Jessica Timothy finished third in the high jump by clearing 4-6. Junior Mai-Ly Criscuolo finished fifth in the prelims of the 55-meter hurdles with a mark of 9.95 seconds. She lowered her time to a 9.78 in the finals to take fourth place overall.

Minervino finished fourth in the 1,000 (3:25.11), Berardino found fourth in the 1,600 (6:00.36), and DiMatteo was fourth in the 3,200 (13:28). Twatchman finished fifth in the 600 with a time of 1:54.18. In the pole vault, junior Morgan Schultz placed fifth (7-0) for H-K, while fellow junior Sally Pizzuto took sixth (6-6).

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray (H-K/M/H-R) gymnastics team competed against Mercy and Valley Regional in a tri-meet on Feb. 6, after which the Cougars participated in the Shoreline Conference Championship meet the following day.

H-K/M/H-R finished with a score of 63.05 in its meet versus Mercy and Valley Regional at Flip-Flop Gymnastics. Mercy posted a total of 124.80, while Valley tallied a score of 112.70 on the evening.

Freshman Juliana Gagliardi totaled an all-around score of 35.35 by scoring a 9.1 on the beam to go with a 9.0 on floor, an 8.8 on vault, and an 8.45 on bars for the Cougars. Sophomore Katherine Bergman scored an 8.15 on floor, an 8.1 on vault, a 7.0 for the beam, and a 4.45 on bars for an all-around total of 27.7.

On Feb. 7, H-K/M/H-R competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship at ABC Gymnastics. The Cougars came in third place by scoring 62.85 points at the meet.

Gagliardi scored an 8.9 on floor, an 8.85 for the vault, and an 8.2 on both beam and bars for an all-around score of 34.15. Bergman scored an all-around total of 28.7 by virtue of her performances on beam (8.05), floor (7.9), vault (7.75), and bars (5.0).

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug (LH/H-K/C) boys’ ice hockey squad played three divisional games at Northford Ice Pavilion last week and came away from the stretch with a pair of victories. The Trojans now stand with an overall record of 7-5-1 to go with a mark of 4-3 in SCC/SWC Division II action.

On Feb. 1, LH/H-K/C skated to an 11-1 home win versus North Branford. Two days later, the Trojans hosted Amity and defeated the Spartans by a 5-1 score. Then on Feb. 8, LH/H-K/C was back at Northford Ice Pavilion and dropped a 2-0 decision against Hand.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K claimed victory in two of its three games last week to improve to 5-11 entering the final week of the regular season.

On Feb. 3, the Cougars dropped a 55-31 decision at Morgan in a Shoreline Conference game on Feb. 3. Then on Feb. 5, H-K defeated non-conference opponent East Granby by a 59-52 score in a home game. The very next day, H-K hosted Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors by the final tally of 48-41 in a Shoreline showdown.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars split a pair of contests last week and are now 4-9 on the year.

On Feb. 4, H-K hosted Morgan and earned a 65-63 victory against the Huskies. Three days later, the Cougars took a 63-49 road loss versus Valley Regional in Deep River.
