H-K Boys’ Track Defends Shoreline Championship

For the second year in a row, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ indoor track team is the class of the Shoreline Conference. On Feb. 8, the Cougars topped the competition at the Shoreline Conference Championship meet to cement their second-consecutive league title, doing so in convincing fashion. With gold medals galore and a plethora of top-notch performances, H-K totaled a score of 170 points and sailed away from second-place Old Saybrook (108 points) at Floyd Little Athletic Center.

H-K was bolstered by six individual victories and two wins from its relays on its way to defending its Shoreline title. Junior Matt Jennings hit the trifecta with first-place finishes in three distance events for the Cougars. Jennings claimed first in the 1,000 (2:32.94), the 1,600 (4:38.14), and the 3,200 (10:23.40), winning all three events for the second-straight campaign.

Senior Seth Regan finished first in the 55-meter dash for H-K. Regan ran the fastest time of 6.80 seconds in the preliminaries and then dropped to a 6.68 to take first place in the finals.

Fellow senior Luke Sodergren won the 55-meter hurdles by running a time of 8.14 seconds in the finals. Sodergren also had the best time in the prelims at 8.33.

H-K’s other individual victory came in the shot put. Junior John Bruder claimed first place in the shot by unleashing a throw of 43 feet-8 inches for Head Coach Richard Dupuis’s team.

The Cougars’ 4x200 relay of senior Dalton Modehn, senior Dmytri Mallon, junior Aidan Coleman, and Regan recorded a time of 1:35.46 to take first place. The 1,600 sprint medley relay featuring Mallon, Regan, Sodergren, and junior Max Cozean finished first with a mark of 3:53.89.

The Cougars also saw several runner-up showings at Shorelines. Junior Eamon Sweeney placed second in the high jump with a height of 5-10 and was also second for the prelims of the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.46. Sophomore Caleb Freeman finished second in the 3,200 (10:25.05), Mallon placed second for the 300 (37.69), and Modehn took second in the long jump by reaching 19 feet-7 inches.

Coleman finished third in the 300 with a time of 38.84. Freeman took fourth in the 1,000 (2:47.47), senior Colin Mack claimed fourth in the shot put (38-7.5), and Sweeney came in fourth place for the long jump (19-11).

Modehn also competed in the 55-meter dash for H-K. He took fifth in the prelims with a time of 7.17 and then went a 7.16 to finish fourth for the finals. Cozean finished fifth in the 600 (1:30.37), and senior Owen Howes cleared 10-6 for fifth place in the pole vault. Spector finished sixth in the 3,200 by crossing the finish line with a time of 11:07.65.

H-K’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Lucas Kameon, freshman Jack Insalaco, junior Michael Coleman, and sophomore Greyson Merola took fourth place in a time of 9:04.09. The 4x400 relay of Cozean, Sodergren, Howes, and sophomore Lucas Kameon recorded a mark of 3:50.86 to take fifth place.

The next phase of the Cougars’ postseason journey is the Class S State Championship that’s happening this week. The state meet is being held at Floyd Little Athletic Center and will commence at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14.
