North Haven Girls’ Hoops Improves to 11-5; Track Teams Represent at SCCs

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball came away with two wins in its three games last week to improve to 11-5 entering the home stretch of the regular season. The Indians defeated Lauralton Hall, lost to East Haven, and then earned an overtime victory versus Shelton in last week’s matchups.

North Haven started off the week by earning a 52-27 road win over Lauralton Hall on Feb. 3. The Indians grabbed a 14-2 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 30-11 at halftime. Leading 37-18 heading into the fourth quarter, North Haven put the game away by outscoring the Crusaders 15-9 during the final frame.

Sophomore Eveani Okwuosa scored 13 points to go with four steals for North Haven. Junior Carly Fresher had eight points with four steals, juniors Sarah Puzone and Olivia Stefanik contributed six points apiece, and senior Colleen Lucey added five points.

Then on Feb. 5, the Indians hosted East Haven and took a 42-39 defeat to the Yellowjackets in an SCC Hammonasset Division game. East Haven had a 12-11 edge following the first quarter and then outscored North Haven 11-4 during the second to take a 23-15 lead into intermission. Trailing 33-23 entering the fourth quarter, the Indians rallied to make it a close game, but East Haven was able to hang on and secure the three-point victory.

Puzone scored 13 points and had four steals for the Indians. Okwuosa had six points and seven rebounds, while senior Zoi Burns scored four points to go with five boards, two steals, and two blocks.

Two days later, North Haven notched a 36-35 overtime win against divisional opponent Shelton to move to 2-3 in Hammonasset play this season. With the score tied, junior Olivia Stefanik hit the go-ahead free throw with just 1.3 seconds left in the game to lift the Indians to the one-point victory.

Okwuosa scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had three steals for North Haven. Stefanik scored five points, while senior Laura Petrafesa had five points and two steals to help the Indians emerge victorious. Burns had seven rebounds with three blocks and two steals for Head Coach Tom Blake’s squad.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians lost two contests last week and are now 7-8 on the year.

On Feb. 4, North Haven took a 92-68 road loss against Sheehan. The Titans jumped out to a 29-8 lead after the first quarter and went on to get the win over the Indians. Senior Dave Christoforo scored 14 points for North Haven. Seniors Justin White and Joe Vitale both scored 12 points, as did sophomore Chris Hager. Senior Bryce Charney added nine points for the Indians.

Three days later, North Haven hosted Hamden and dropped an 86-48 decision to the Green Dragons. Charney scored 14 points, Christoforo had nine points, and Vitale and sophomore Ty Rooney each scored seven points.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team took a pair of non-conference losses last week, but came back strong to earn an overtime victory versus West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy in a pivotal division game. The Blades haven an overall record of 11-5-1 entering the final week of the regular season.

A-NH-C lost a 5-0 decision against Hall-Conard in a home game at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Feb. 1. Then on Feb. 6, the Blades took a 7-0 road loss to Simsbury in another non-conference contest.

Two days later, the Blades hosted West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy (WH-SHA) for an SCC clash and came away with a 7-6 win in overtime. A-NH-C moved into first place in the SCC standings with a record of 6-0, while WH-SHA dropped to 6-1 in divisional play.

The Blades were down 5-0 after the first period, but scored five goals during the second period, and were only down 6-5 entering the third. Caroline Cadelina scored in the third period to tie the game and then Haley Cable netted the game-winner during the overtime session. Cadelina and Cable both scored two goals, while Tess Csejka had a goal with four assists for the Blades.

Cheerleading

The Indians’ cheerleading team competed at the SCC Championship that was held at North Haven High School on Jan. 1. North Haven finished in sixth place by posting a score of 79.75 at the conference meet. Alyssa Cannavaciolo, Sophie Kornacki, and Emily Orth earned All-SCC honors on behalf of Head Coach Kathleen Crisafi’s squad.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Luke Maruca finished third in the shot put, while brother and fellow senior Kyle Maruca took fourth place in the event, to lead North Haven at last week’s SCC Championship. The Indians scored 10 points as a team to finish in 13th place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7.

Luke Maruca posted a throw of 46 feet-3.5 inches to place third in the shot put at SCCs. Kyle Maruca finished fourth with a distance of 45-5.5 for the Indians. Senior Matt Mullen finished seventh (43-3.75) for the shot put, and fellow senior Dominic Borrelli took 10th place (41-1.25).

Junior Patrick Rourke came in 10th place for the 600-meter run with a time of 1:30.31. Senior Ethan Testa finished 11th in the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles at 9.09 seconds.

North Haven’s 4x800 relay of Rourke, senior Aidan Bergin, sophomore Mike Rubano, and sophomore Mike Crowley finished ninth (9:32.01); the 4x200 relay of sophomore Jack Pollard, sophomore Michael DeVilliers, junior Anthony Vigliotto, and junior Taray Smart came in 10th (1:42.79); and the 4x400 relay featuring Pollard, DeVilliers, Rourke, and senior Cameron Laich also finished in 10th place (3:53.35) at the SCC meet.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Indians sent several athletes to compete at the SCC Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7. North Haven finished in 15th place by scoring five points at the meet.

One week after winning the high jump at the SCC West Sectional Championship, sophomore Lorelei King took fifth place in the event at the SCC Championship by clearing 4 feet-8 inches. Fellow sophomore Makayla Greene also cleared 4-8 and finished in sixth place. Sophomore El-Lana Coleman came in eighth place with a height of 4-6.

Sophomore Courtney McFarland claimed fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet-8.5 inches for North Haven. Fellow sophomore Emily Cocco took 13th place with a toss of 28-4.5.

Senior Elizabeth DeVaux finished 10th for the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.96 seconds. Senior Sammy Curcio placed 19th in the 55-meter dash prelims at 7.94 seconds.

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of King, sophomore Grace Finch, junior Sofia Fappiano, and sophomore Ada Forbes recorded a time of 4:42.07 to finish in 11th place. The 1,600 sprint medley relay of Curcio, Finch, junior Paula Fappiano, and junior Taya Stanley also finished 11th with a mark of 5:14.88

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving squad posted a pair of divisional wins by defeating Hamden and West Haven-Platt Tech in last week’s action. The Warriors improved to 5-2 overall with a record of 3-0 in SCC Division II with the victories.

On Feb. 4, GNH hosted Hamden and prevailed by a 94-80 score at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Three days later, the Indians claimed a 90-82 road victory against West Haven-Platt Tech at West Haven High School.

Several athletes turned in lifetime-best and season-best performances for the Warriors during last week’s meets. Freshman Joey Gould turned in a lifetime-best in the 500 freestyle (5:39.49) to go with season-best swims in the 50 freestyle (26.67) and 200 freestyle (2:11.23). Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam a lifetime-best of 56.46 in the 100 freestyle and finished the 50 freestyle with a season-best mark of 25.31. Freshman Aiden Cohen recorded a lifetime best in the 500 freestyle (5:15.77) and a season best for the 100 butterfly (1:01.21) for GNH. Junior Daniel Kamen swam a lifetime-best time in the 100 butterfly (1:07.40), while junior Ray Lewis did the same in the 100 freestyle (1:08.08).

The following athletes recorded season-best times for the Warriors last week: junior Alan Penna in the 100 freestyle (58.61) and 200 freestyle (2:09.65), freshman RT Trotter in the 200 individual medley (2:16.48) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.03), freshman Spencer Carroll for the 100 butterfly (1:05.29) and 100 backstroke (1:04.36), junior David Zhang in the 100 freestyle (57.43), and freshman Lucas Espinosa in the 100 freestyle (59.78).

Also swimming season-best times were sophomore Hethon Foster in the 500 freestyle (5:09.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.15), senior Aidan Henry in the 500 freestyle (4:48.42), sophomore Finn Henry in the 500 freestyle (4:48.47), and senior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.26).
