Francois Takes 2nd in Two Events, Kwadan-naab 3rd in Hurdles at SCCs; Yellowjackets’ Hockey Wins 4th in a Row

Girls’ Indoor Track

Junior Kisha Francois claimed second place in two events to lead the East Haven girls’ indoor track team to an eighth-place finish at the SCC Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7. The Yellowjackets totaled 24 points on their way to taking eighth place at the meet.

One week after winning the long jump at the SCC West Sectional Championship, Francois came in second for the event at the conference meet. Francois recorded a leap of 16 feet-5.25 inches on her way to earning runner-up honors in the event.

Francois also took second place in the 55-meter dash for East Haven. Francois was second in the preliminaries with a time of 7.56 seconds and then came back with a 7.55 in the finals to place second overall.

Senior Edith Kwadan-naab finished third in the 55-meter hurdles. Kwadan-Naab ran a time of 9.33 to take third place for the prelims and then lowered her time to 9.19 to finish third in the finals.

The Yellowjackets’ 4x200 relay of Francois, junior Samantha Franceschi, Kwadan-naab, and freshman Adrianna Franceschi posted a time of 1:52.57 to take fifth place at SCCs.

Sophomore Emily Mazzucco and freshman Jessica Urban finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the high jump after both athletes cleared 4-6. Urban also finished ninth for the prelims of the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.92. Samantha Franceschi was ninth in the 55 dash prelims at 7.78.

Sophomore Morgan D’Auria finished eighth in the pole vault (7-0) and 10th in the high jump (4-4) for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Juliana Espinoza took 15th place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:42.69.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Yellowjackets sent a few athletes to compete at last week’s SCC Championship. East Haven finished in 15th place by scoring three points at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7.

Junior Radames Figueroa finished seventh in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67 seconds and then improved to 8.63 in the finals to take fifth place overall for the Yellowjackets. Senior Ian Loehmann placed fifth in the prelims with an 8.58 and finished sixth for the finals at 8.64. Loehmann also took 10th place in the high jump by clearing 5 feet-4 inches.

East Haven’s 4x200 relay of senior Nathan Santos, junior Frank Piscitelli, senior Dante Sigular, and senior Andrew Jiminez finished in ninth place with a time of 1:40.82. Piscitelli also finished 15th in the 300-meter dash by running a time of 39.61. Junior Kevin Francois took 19th place for the long jump with a distance of 17-11.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey squad improved to 7-5 on the season by earning a pair of victories against SCC/SWC Division II opponents last week. The Yellowjackets defeated Amity and North Branford last week and have now won their last four games in a row.

On Feb. 1, East Haven hosted Amity and netted a 4-1 win versus the Spartans at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Junior Dave Amatruda had a hat trick by scoring three goals for East Haven in the victory. Amatruda scored an unassisted goal to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead with 7:59 left in the first period. Amity tied the game by scoring a goal 31 seconds later, but just one minute after that, East Haven took the lead for good when Amatruda netted another unassisted goal with 6:29 to play in the frame.

Sophomore Duncan Rider scored from fellow sophomore Mike Robert to give East Haven a 3-1 lead with 12:38 remaining in the second period. With 1:35 left in the period, Amatruda secured his hat trick by scoring his third unassisted goal of the game for a 4-1 advantage. Senior goalie Logan Hamilton made 30 saves for East Haven.

Then on Feb. 5, the Yellowjackets claimed a 5-1 road victory over divisional opponent North Branford to move to 4-1 in SWC/SWC Division II action. East Haven scored three goals during the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Josh Berg scored an unassisted goal with 9:44 left in the period, junior Chad Feola scored from junior Cory Benni and Robert just 32 seconds later, and then junior Rocco Plano scored a goal with 3:06 to go in the first.

With 1:37 remaining in the second period, Amatrauda scored from Plano and sophomore Parker Sprankle to make it 4-0 through two. After North Branford scored early in the third, East Haven put the victory on ice when freshman Nic Ruggiero scored from Amatruda and Feola with 8:42 left in the game. Hamilton turned aside 32 shots to get another win in goal.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-East Haven-North Branford (B-EH-NB) girls’ ice hockey squad took three home losses in recent action. The Wings have a record of 3-12-1 on the season.

On Feb. 1, B-EH-NB dropped a 4-2 decision to Avon-Southington-RHAM-Newington-Lewis Mills-Wethersfield at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Then on Feb. 5, the Wings hosted Mercy-Northwest Catholic for another non-conference game and took a 5-2 defeat. Three days later, the Wings lost to SCC opponent Guilford by a 4-2 score to move to 1-6 in conference play this year.

Boys’ Basketball

East Haven came away with a split of two recent games by losing to Foran and beating Lyman Hall to move to 4-11 on the campaign.

On Feb. 3, East Haven took a 56-54 road loss versus Foran. Then on Feb. 7, the Yellowjackets got back in the win column by notching a 51-30 home victory against Lyman Hall at East Haven High School.

Cheerleading

The Yellowjackets’ cheerleading team competed at the SCC Championship that was held at North Haven High School on Jan. 1. East Haven finished in eighth place by posting a score of 75.15 at the conference meet.

Wrestling

East Haven hosted Foran for an SCC Division 1 matchup on Feb. 4. The Yellowjackets took a 45-31 defeat against the Lions to move to 14-6 overall with a record of 2-3 in the division.

East Haven saw six wrestlers pick up wins in its contest versus Foran. Junior Dominic Milano prevailed by an 11-2 decision in the 106-pound weight class for the Yellowjackets. Junior Matt DiVito pinned his opponent at the 1:19 mark of their 126-pound bout, senior Alec DiVito earned a 4-3 win via decision at 138, and senior Tanner DiVito won by pin just 16 seconds into his 138-pound duel. Junior Gunner Horton notched a pinfall victory at the 4:40 mark in the 220-pound bout, while fellow junior Tyler Kruse pinned his adversary in 1:47 at 285 pounds.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving squad posted a pair of divisional wins by defeating Hamden and West Haven-Platt Tech in last week’s action. The Warriors improved to 5-2 overall with a record of 3-0 in SCC Division II with the victories.

On Feb. 4, GNH hosted Hamden and prevailed by a 94-80 score at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Three days later, the Indians claimed a 90-82 road victory against West Haven-Platt Tech at West Haven High School.

Several athletes turned in lifetime-best and season-best performances for the Warriors during last week’s meets. Freshman Joey Gould turned in a lifetime-best in the 500 freestyle (5:39.49) to go with season-best swims in the 50 freestyle (26.67) and 200 freestyle (2:11.23). Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam a lifetime-best of 56.46 in the 100 freestyle and finished the 50 freestyle with a season-best mark of 25.31. Freshman Aiden Cohen recorded a lifetime best in the 500 freestyle (5:15.77) and a season best for the 100 butterfly (1:01.21) for GNH. Junior Daniel Kamen swam a lifetime-best time in the 100 butterfly (1:07.40), while junior Ray Lewis did the same in the 100 freestyle (1:08.08).

The following athletes recorded season-best times for the Warriors last week: junior Alan Penna in the 100 freestyle (58.61) and 200 freestyle (2:09.65), freshman RT Trotter in the 200 individual medley (2:16.48) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.03), freshman Spencer Carroll for the 100 butterfly (1:05.29) and 100 backstroke (1:04.36), junior David Zhang in the 100 freestyle (57.43), and freshman Lucas Espinosa in the 100 freestyle (59.78).

Also swimming season-best times were sophomore Hethon Foster in the 500 freestyle (5:09.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.15), senior Aidan Henry in the 500 freestyle (4:48.42), sophomore Finn Henry in the 500 freestyle (4:48.47), and senior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.26).
