Old Saybrook played a pair of games last week and lost both contests on the slate. With the defeats, the Rams record dropped to 0-12 on the season.
On Jan. 28, Old Saybrook headed to Portland for a contest versus the Highlanders and took a narrow 79-74 defeat. Portland took a 23-19 lead after the first quarter, and the Rams battled back to secure a 44-40 lead at halftime. Portland regained a one-point lead after the third at 57-56, and went on to the 79-74 win by outscoring the Rams by four points in the fourth quarter.
Michael Almada led Old Saybrook with 20 points, and Gino Gallitto scored 16 points. Davis Brown and Riley Lawson scored eight points each. Also adding points for the Rams were Toby Marineau (6), Tucker Gometz (6), Ryan Stratton (6), Will Bergeron (2), and Benjamin Yost (2).
On Jan. 31, Old Saybrook dropped a 50-47 home game to Westbrook. The Knights took a 13-12 edge at the end of one quarter. In the second quarter, the Rams tied the game at 21-21 by halftime. Old Saybrook surged ahead to a 38-29 lead after three quarters, but Westbrook came back with a 21-9 fourth quarter en route to the 50-47.
Almada led the scoring front for Old Saybrook again with 16 points. Stratton picked up 12 points, while Davis Brown supplied nine points. Gallitto (3), Lawson (3), Yost (2), and Gometz (2) all scored in the loss as well.
Girls’ Basketball
The Rams had three of games on last week’s slate and lost each of the contests on their schedule. Old Saybrook’s record fell to 2-14 on the season with the losses.
On Jan. 27, the Rams hosted Portland and took a 51-45 overtime defeat to the Highlanders. Portland got out to an 8-2 lead after the first quarter, and extended that lead to 22-15 by the end of the half. Old Saybrook closed the gap a bit in the third as the Highlanders held a 33-28 edge, and the Rams were able draw even at 41-41 by the end of regulation. Portland outpaced Old Saybrook 10-4 in the overtime period en route to the 51-45 win.
Kayla Holt scored 10 points in the loss, while Taylor Cote also scored 10 points and supplied seven rebounds. Beldina Feratovic posted nine points to go with 16 rebounds and three blocks. Abby Bergeron also added eight points.
The next day, the Rams headed to North Branford and lost a 48-35 contest to the Thunderbirds. North Branford took a 17-11 advantage after the first quarter, and pulled away with a 15-5 second quarter to a 32-16 halftime lead. By the end of the third, North Branford’s lead stood at 45-23 after the third. Old Saybrook put together a 12-3 fourth quarter, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
On Jan. 30, Old Saybrook lost a 40-30 road contest to Westbrook. The Rams fell behind Westbrook 15-6 after the first quarter. At halftime, Westbrook had a 20-12 advantage. Old Saybrook fought back to close Westbrook’s lead to 33-28 by the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, the Rams closed the gap to three points five seconds left in the game, but the Knights ultimately secured the 40-36 win.
