02/02/2020 11:00 PMThe North Haven indoor track program was represented by several athletes from both its boys’ and girls’ teams when the Southern Connecticut Conference West Sectional Championship took place last week. The North Haven girls’ team scored 43 points and finished in fifth place at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 28. The boys’ squad finished in eighth place with 22 points scored at sectionals. Wilbur Cross took the team title at both the boys’ and girls’ meets.
Sophomore Lorelei King earned a first-place finish in the high jump for the Indians’ girls’ team. King and East Haven’s Emily Mazzucco both cleared 4 feet-10 inches, thus requiring a jump-off to determine the victor. In the jump-off, King recorded the top height of 4 feet-8 inches to take first place overall.
North Haven turned in several quality performances in the shot put at West Sectionals. On the boys’ side, senior Luke Maruca finished second in the shot put by launching a toss of 49 feet-0.5 inches for the Indians. Maruca’s brother, fellow senior Kyle Maruca, came in third place for the event with a distance of 45-1.
Senior Courtney McFarland claimed second place in the shot put for the girls’ team with a throw of 33 feet-1.25 inches. Sophomore Emily Cocco recorded a distance of 30-4.25 to take third place.
Senior Elizabeth DeVaux took third place in the 55-meter hurdles for North Haven. DeVaux finished fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 9.95 seconds to advance to the final. In the final heat, she improved her time to 9.77 seconds on her way to placing third overall.
North Haven’s 4x800 relay of King, senior Reagan Forbes, junior Taya Stanley, and sophomore Ada Forbes finished third by recording a time of 11:10.61 at sectionals. The 4x400 relay of King, sophomore Grace Finch, junior Sofia Fappiano, and Ada Forbes finished fourth (4:37.45); the 1,600 sprint medley relay of senior Sammy Curcio, DeVaux, Stanley, and Reagan Forbes took sixth (4:58.63); and the 4x200 relay featuring Finch, Sofia Fappiano, Paula Fappiano, and Curcio came in eighth place (1:59.06). Curcio also finished ninth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash by running a time of 7.90 seconds.
The Indians’ boys’ team was also well-represented in the relay event at the West Sectional Championship. North Haven’s best showing came from its 4x400 relay of sophomore Jack Pollard, sophomore Michael DeVilliers, junior Patrick Rourke, and sophomore Kevin Rourke, who posted a time of 3:55.04 to finish in fourth place.
Junior Ethan Testa sprinted his way to a sixth-place performance in the 55-meter hurdles. Testa clocked in at 8.92 to take seventh place in the preliminaries and then finished sixth for the finals with a time of 9.00.
Senior Matthew Mullen claimed sixth place in the shot put with a toss of 41-11.25 for North Haven. Fellow senior Dominic Borrelli finished seventh for the shot by throwing a distance of 41-4.75.
The Indians’ 4x200 relay of Pollard, DeVilliers, junior Anthony Vigliotto, and junior Taray Smart came in sixth place (1:41.92), while the 4x800 relay of Kevin Rourke, senior Aidan Bergin, sophomore Mike Rubano, and Patrick Rourke also finished sixth (9:04.95). North Haven’s 1,600 sprint medley relay of senior Marco DiBenedetto, senior Anthony Cretella, senior Cameron Laich, and sophomore Sam Crowley placed eighth with a mark of 4:39.46.
Patrick Rourke took ninth place in the 600 with a time of 1:32.37. Smart placed 10th for the prelims of the 55-meter dash by hitting the finish line in 7.09.
Next up for North Haven is the SCC Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. The Class L State Championship is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, and the State Open takes place at noon on Saturday, Feb. 22 with both events being held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
