North Haven Boys’ Hockey Skates into States; Girls’ Basketball Gets 4th-Straight Win

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The North Haven boys’ ice hockey squad qualified for the Division II State Tournament by earning a win versus Watertown-Pomperaug (W-P) last week. On Jan. 29, the Indians hosted W-P and prevailed by a 2-0 score to cement their place in states. With the win, North Haven improved to 7-4-3 overall and boosted its record to 4-0-2 in SCC/SWC Division II games.

The Indians struck first when junior Nick Howlett snuck one in from the point on an assist by sophomore Brian Jooss with 10:46 left in the first period.

North Haven maintained its one-goal edge until sophomore Jake Hines scored an empty-net goal to seal the 2-0 win for the Indians. Sophomore goalie Jared Anderson saved 15 shots to get the shutout between the pipes for Head Coach Chris Avena’s club.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire girls’ ice hockey team hosted New Canaan for a non-conference game on Jan. 28. The Blades took a 3-2 loss against the Rams at Lou Astorino Ice Arena to move to 10-3-1 on the year.

New Canaan took a 1-0 lead over the Blades in the second period before Carly Silbert scored a goal to tie the game. New Canaan came back with a goal later in the period and then scored a goal during the third to take a 3-1 advantage. Tess Csjeka netted a goal to cut it to 3-2, but the Blades were unable to get the equalizer.

Girls’ Basketball

One week after clinching a spot in states, the Indians hit the road to West Haven for a Friday night showdown on Jan. 31. North Haven came away with a 48-44 victory against the Blue Devils to improve to 9-4 on the year.

North Haven held a 10-5 advantage over West Haven after the first quarter. The Indians were up 27-21 at halftime, led 35-31 through three quarters, and held off the Blue Devils the rest of the way to get their fourth-straight victory.

Junior Sarah Puzone scored 15 points and had three steals for North Haven. Senior Zoi Burns scored 10 points to go with eight rebounds, while junior Julia Bogen had 10 points with five rebounds. Sophomore Eveani Okwuosa scored six points with six boards and three steals in the win.

Boys’ Basketball

The North Haven boys’ basketball team took two defeats last week and is now 7-6 on the year.

On Jan. 28, North Haven hosted West Haven dropped a 59-46 decision to the Blue Devils in an SCC Oronoque Division game. The Indians moved to 1-3 in the division with the defeat.

West Haven jumped out to a 18-9 lead after the first quarter against North Haven. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 39-20 at halftime and went on to get the victory. Senior Jaden Watson scored 11 points, while fellow senior Dave Christoforo had 11 points for the Indians. Sophomore Chris Hager scored eight points, senior Bryce Charney scored seven points, and senior Joe Vitale added five points.

Three days later, the Indians took a 72-66 overtime loss to Shelton in another home game. Shelton grabbed a 21-9 lead after the first quarter and was up 35-22 at halftime. North Haven clawed its way back by outscoring the Gaels during both the third (17-11) and fourth (21-14) quarters to tie the score at 60-60 and send the game to overtime. Shelton outscored North Haven by a 12-6 margin during the OT period to come away with the win.

Charney had a big game by scoring 27 points for North Haven. Christoforo also had a nice night with 19 points in the loss. Hager scored nine points, and Vitale had eight points.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team had the week off in terms of competitions last week. The Warriors, who have a record of 3-2, will take on West Haven-Platt Tech for a meet at West Haven High School on Friday, Feb. 7. Then on Monday, Jan. 10, the Warriors will face Foran-Law at Foran High School. Both meets begin at 4 p.m.
