The Morgan boys’ basketball squad played a pair of games last week and ended up with a split on that slate of games. With these results, the Huskies’ record on the year moved to 9-4.
On Jan. 29, Morgan hosted North Branford, and the Huskies defeated the Thunderbirds by a score of 81-60. Morgan jumped out to a 25-15 lead in the first quarter, and then increase that lead 41-28 by the half. In the second half, the Huskies outscored North Branford 40-32 in the second half en route to the 81-60 win.
Zach Johnson led all scorers with 28 points, and Jason Cohen added 16 points. Rob Zirlis provided 14 points, while Connor Duffy supplied eight point. Drew Nye (6), Gavin Krott (5), and Cam Carlesen (4) also notched points for the Huskies.
Two days later, Morgan lost a 69-56 home contest to Valley Regional. The Warriors got out to a 15-12 lead in the first quarter, and the Huskies cut into that lead to two at 27-25 by halftime. Valley added to the lead with a 23-20 third quarter and a 19-11 fourth quarter to defeat Morgan 69-56.
Girls’ Basketball
The Huskies’ schedule last week included a single game against North Branford last week. Morgan picked up a 50-38 road win over the Thunderbirds on Jan. 28. The victory pushed the Huskies’ record to 9-4 on the season.
Morgan got out to a 15-12 in the first quarter, and stretched that lead 29-21 by halftime. The Huskies stifled North Branford to the tune of 12-2 in the third quarter, and though the Thunderbirds outscored Morgan 15-9, it was too little too late as the Huskies won 50-38.
Catie Donadio led the Huskies in scoring with 16 points to go with eight steals, seven rebounds, five assists, and five blocks. Leah McComiskey added 10 points, nine blocks, six points, four assists, and three steals, while Rachel Lehn supplied nine points, six blocks, three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Caeley Ayer provided nine points, four rebounds, four steals, two assists, and a block, while Katie Martin added five points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
Wrestling
The Morgan wrestling team had a dual meet against SCC Division 2 rival Jonathan Law last week. The Huskies hosted Law and picked up a 40-33 win over the Eagles on Jan. 28. The victory moved to Morgan’s overall record to 4-2 and 4-0 in the division.
During the Shoreline Scuffle on Jan. 25, Louis Bradley won his 100th high school wrestling match. Bradley took first place overall in the 138-pound division, and he was awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.
Gymnastics
The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray (H-K/M/H-R) gymnastics squad competed in two meets at Flip-Flop gymnastics last week.
On Jan. 29, the Cougars had a meet with Mercy, Valley Regional, and Old Lyme. Mercy finished with a score of 128.85, Valley Regional totaled a scored of 114.75, Old Lyme posted a score of 100.2, and H-K/M/H-R finished the meet with a score of 60.90.
Sophomore Katherine Bergman and freshman Juliana Gagliardi competed in all four events for the Cougars at the meet. Bergman finished with a score of 8.25 on vault, 7.3 on beam, 7.1 for the floor, and 3.6 on bars. Gagliardi scored a 9.15 on vault, an 8.8 on beam, an 8.4 on floor, and an 8.3 for the bars.
On Jan. 31, H-K/M/H-R competed against Mercy and Valley Regional in another meet at Flip-Flop Gymnastics. H-K/M/H-R lost a 132.40-27.20 decision against Mercy and a 107.30-27.2 decision versus Valley Regional.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving team competed against three teams in a pair of road meets last week. The Cougars came away from the stretch with three victories to remain undefeated with a record of 7-0 this winter.
On Jan. 28, the Cougars earned two wins by sweeping a tri-meet at Waterford High School, earning a 111-71 victory against Waterford and a 114-24 win over St. Bernard. Junior Kyle Mazziotti took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.45 seconds and also won the 100 backstroke at 1:04.15 to help the Cougars get the sweep. Senior Eli Houlton finished first in the 100 freestyle (1:01.48) and 200 freestyle (2:11.75), while Zach Houlton earned top honors for both the 400 freestyle (4:31.27) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.07). Freshman Jack Ferguson finished first in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:29.89.
The Cougars’ 200 medley relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, senior Jimmy Clemente, and Zach Houlton finished in first place at 2:00.90; and the 400 freestyle relay featuring Ferguson, Eli Houlton, Mazziotti, and Zach Houlton was first with a time of 4:03.85.
Two days later, H-K/M/VR was back on the road to face Lyman Hall-Coginchaug and prevailed by a 98-83 final at Sheehan High School. Earning first-place finishes were Ferguson in the 200 freestyle (2:00.78) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.47), Eli Houlton in the 200 individual medley (2:06.02) and 100 butterfly (59.45), Mazziotti in the 100 freestyle (52.59) and 100 backstroke (56.59), Clemente for the 50 freestyle (25.22), and Zach Houlton in the 500 freestyle (5:02.60).
The Cougars’ 200 medley relay of Mazziotti, Zach Houlton, Clemente, and Eli Houlton finished first (1:47); the 200 freestyle relay featuring Ferguson, sophomore Colby Kish, junior Egan Rothrock, and Clemente took first place (1:41.19); and the 400 freestyle relay of Eli Houlton, Mazziotti, Ferguson, and Zach Houlton also came in first place (3:37.45).
