The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team had two games scheduled last week and split the pair going 1-1 on the slate. With these results, the Warriors’ overall record moved to 5-6 on the season.
On Jan. 21, the Warriors headed to Portland and lost a a close 39-36 contest against the Highlanders. Valley took an early 14-6 lead in the first quarter, but Portland battled back to within two points by halftime with a 10-4 second quarter. With the score a 18-16 in favor of Valley going into the second half, Portland inched just a bit closer with a 8-7 third quarter. Portland overtook Valley for good in the final frame outscoring the Warriors 15-11 en route to the 39-36 final score.
Alena Crosby led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points, and Bitzy Klomp was right behind her with 11 points to her credit. Addi Marchese scored six points.
Three days later, the Warriors head to Old Saybrook where they defeated the Rams by a score of 45-37. Valley outscored Old Saybrook in every quarter beginning with a 10-7 first frame. The Warriors increased the lead with a score of 11-8 in the second quarter to take a 21-15 lead into halftime. Valley and Old Saybrook put up identical 12-11 frames in the third and fourth quarters, and Valley took the 45-37 contest.
Crosby led the scoring attack again with 10 points, and Ava Cunningham had eight points. Liz Allen had seven points, while Marchese supplied six points.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton-Morgan-Valley Regional (EH-OL-OS-EH-M-VR) co-op boys’ ice hockey squad played a pair of games last week and split the set to move to 4-5 this winter. EH-OL-OS-EH-M-VR lost a close game against Hall-Southington, but came back to shut out Milford later in the week.
On Jan. 22, East Haven took a 4-3 road loss to Hall-Southington (H-S) at Veterans Memorial Ice Rink in West Hartford. East Haven fell into a 3-0 hole after the first period, but scored two goals during the second to make it 3-2. Senior Alec Speirs scored on an assist from junior Dave Amatrauda with 13:14 to play in the period. Then with 5:29 to go, Amatrauda assisted sophomore Duncan Rider for a goal that drew EH-OL-OS-EH-M-VR to within one goal through two.
H-S scored a goal to increase its lead to 4-2 with 11:15 remaining in the game. Speirs cut it to 4-3 when he scored his second goal from Amatruda with 1:32 on the clock, but the Warriors were able to hang on for the one-goal victory. Senior Logan Hamilton made 28 saves in goal for EH-OL-OS-EH-M-VR.
Three days after that, EH-OL-OS-EH-M-VR played a home game against the Milford co-op team and triumphed by a 3-0 final at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Hamilton turned aside 19 shots to get the shutout in net for East Haven.
EH-OL-OS-EH-M-VR went up 1-0 when Rider scored from junior Cory Benni with 5:15 to play in the opening period. East Haven netted a pair of goals during the second period to go up 3-0. First, Benni scored an unassisted goal with 12:14 left in the frame. With 3:55 remaining, Amatruda lit the lamp on an assist by Speirs to give East Haven a three-goal lead heading into the third period.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme (H-C-VR-OL) girls’ ice hockey team played three recent games and came away with one victory to move to 3-8 this year.
On Jan. 22, the Tigers earned a 5-3 home win versus Branford-North Branford-East Haven at Northford Ice Pavilion. The very next day, H-C-VR-OL took a 5-0 road loss to Mercy-Northwest Catholic. Then on Jan. 25, the Tigers hosted Wilton-Norwalk-McMahon and lost by an 8-4 score.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional boys’ swimming and diving team hosted the Foran-Law co-op for a meet on Jan. 22. The Cougars notched a 94-74 victory to improve their record to 4-0 on the year.
Gymnastics
The Valley gymnastics squad did battle with a few teams in a meet at Flip Flop Gymnastics last week.
On Jan. 23, Valley Regional took third place with a score of 115.8 points. Hand claimed first place with 126.5 points. Then, Mercy was close behind with a score of 125.4, and Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray came in fourth place with a score of 48.3 among the four teams competing.
