North Haven Boys’ Hockey Gets a Win and a Tie; Boys’ Hoops Beats Branford in Overtime

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The North Haven boys’ ice hockey team played three games last week and came away with a win, a loss, and a draw move to 6-4-3 on the campaign. The Indians earned a win versus North Branford, took a loss to Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe, and then played Cheshire to a tie in recent action.

North Haven claimed a 3-2 home victory against North Branford at Northford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 19. The Indians struck first when sophomore Ayden Mindlin scored his first goal of the season with 11:13 left in the opening period. North Branford scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first.

North Haven scored two goals during the second period to go up 3-2. First, sophomore Jake Hines scored on an assist from junior Will Fiore to tie it at 2-2 with 6:08 to play in the period. With 3:47 left, junior Mason Sullivan netted a goal to give the Indians a 3-2 advantage. North Haven kept the pressure on North Branford during the third period and emerged with the one-goal victory.

The next day, the Indians lost to Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe by a 4-1 score at the Wonderland of Ice. Fairfield scored two goals in the first period for a 2-0 lead through one. North Haven notched its lone goal of the game when Fiore scored from junior Aaron Racino to make it 2-1. Fairfield scored one more goal in the second period and another in the third to get the 4-1 win.

Then on Jan. 25, North Haven skated to a 1-1 tie with Cheshire at Wesleyan University. After a scoreless first period, Cheshire got on the board with a goal at the halfway mark of the second period. North Haven tied things up when freshman Tommy Guidone scored from Hines and senior Donny Funaro with 12:32 left in the game. The 1-1 score held up through the rest of regulation and overtime as the two clubs walked off the ice with the tie. Junior Andrew Sacco continued his fine play in goal by turning aside all but one shot from Cheshire.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey squad continued its winning ways by notching a pair of victories last week. The Blades raised their record to 10-2-1 on the season with the wins.

On Jan. 23, the Blades earned a 5-1 road win against Stamford-Westhill-Staples at Terry Conners Ice Rink. A-NH-C scored one goal in each of the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead, then put the game away by scoring three goals during the final frame. Nadia DiNatale had two goals with an assist, while Haley Cable and Tess Csjeka both had a goal and an assist for the Blades.

Two days later, A-NH-C posted a 3-2 overtime win versus Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug in a home game at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. Csjeka scored all three goals for the Blades in the victory, including the game-winner during the OT period. DiNatale assisted on the winner and also had the assist one of Csejka’s goals earlier in the game.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians split a pair of recent matchups and now have a record of 7-4 this winter. North Haven lost to Foran, but bounced back to defeat Branford in last week’s action.

North Haven dropped a 61-44 decision versus Foran in a home game on Jan. 22. Foran held a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and then outscored the Indians 22-11 during the second to take a 37-21 lead into halftime.

Senior Bryce Charney scored 11 points for North Haven. Senior Dave Christoforo scored eight points, junior Torray Armfield had seven points, and sophomore Chris Hager scored five points.

Two days later, the Indians hosted Branford and beat the Hornets by the final score of 55-50 in overtime. Charney hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation and send it OT. In the extra session, Armfield drained a trey to give North Haven the lead for good with a 51-50 advantage.

Christoforo scored 16 points, and Charney had 13 points in the victory. Senior Joe Vitale scored eight points, Hager had six points, and senior Carson Leyerzapf scored five points for Head Coach Justin Falcon’s club.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team went up against the Lyman Hall-Coginchaug co-op in its lone meet of the week. The Warriors earned a 100-77 victory at Sheehan High School to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Freshman Christian Butler qualified for the Class LL Diving State Championship by recording a lifetime-best point total of 181.15 points for the Warriors. Fellow sophomore Patrick Cucchiarelli swam a lifetime-best mark of 1:12.14 in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam a lifetime bests in the 100 freestyle (56.65) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.98), while junior Collin Romero did a lifetime best of 1:05.92 in the 100 freestyle.

Junior Connor Coyne swam a season-best time of 1:58.85 in the 200 freestyle for GNH. Junior Tanner Powell (24.22), freshman Joey Gould (26.82), and sophomore Miguel Pearce (27.40) recorded season bests for the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Finn Henry finished with a season-best mark of 59.30 in the 100 backstroke.
