Morgan’s Basketball Teams Punch State Tourney Tickets

Boys’ Basketball

The Morgan boys’ basketball team had just a single game on last week’s schedule, and the Huskeis came away with a victory. Morgan defeated Westbrook in a 54-48 road victory over the Knights. The win bumped the Huskies’ record up to 8-3 on the season and earned them a spot in the Division V State Tournament.

On Jan. 24, the Huskies got out to a four-point lead after a 10-6 first quarter. Morgan extended that advantage to eight points after a 14-10 second quarter to put the score at 24-16 at halftime. Westbrook went on a run in the third quarter outscoring the Huskies 21-11 and taking a two-point lead into the final frame. The Huskies regained control of the game in the fourth, outpacing the Knights 19-11 en route to the 54-48 win.

Rob Zirlis led Morgan in scoring with 19 points, and Zach Johnson provided 14 points in the win. Cam Carlsen provided seven points on behalf of the Huskies, while Alex Fratemico scored five.

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball team had two games this week and came away with just as many wins. With the pair of victories, the Huskies qualified for the Class M State Tournament with an 8-4 record thus far on the season. Morgan’s wins came against Hale-Ray and Westbrook.

On Jan. 20, the Huskies demolished Hale-Ray to the tune of a 67-32 road win against the noises. Morgan seized control in the first quarter outscoring the Noises 21-6 in the frame.

On Jan. 24, the Huskies grabbed another 20-plus point victory with a 49-27 win versus Westbrook.

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray (H-K/M/H-R) gymnastics team did battle with a few teams in a meet at Flip Flop Gymnastics last week.

On Jan. 23, H-K/M/H-R came in fourth place among the four teams competing with Hand claiming first with 126.5 points. Then, Mercy was close behind with a score of 125.4, and Valley Regional took third place at 115.8. H-K/M/H-R came in fourth place with a score of 48.3.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional boys’ swimming and diving team hosted the Foran-Law co-op for a meet on Jan. 22. The Cougars notched a 94-74 victory to improve their record to 4-0 on the year.
