The Guilford girls’ fencing team picked up two more victories by defeating Cheshire and Morgan in last week matchups. The Indians earned a 15-3 win versus Cheshire on Jan. 14 and then notched a 17-10 victory over Morgan two days later.
Nwal Toma led an épée contingent that produced a 9-0 shutout in the win against Cheshire. Guilford’s foil team prevailed by a 6-3 score versus the Rams.
In the Morgan match, épée fencer Julia Gangemi and foilist Lindsey Smith turned in strong performances to help the Indians sweep the meet. Guilford triumphed in épée (6-3), saber (6-3), and foil (5-4) against Morgan.
The girls’ JV team earned an 18-9 win versus Morgan, led by 7-2 victories from its foil and saber teams. Excellent work from foil fencer Taylor Smith and saber competitors Lucia Rusconi and Kristina Libby helped Guilford come away with the win.
On Jan. 19, the Indians saw several athletes compete at a JV Tournament at North Haven High School. Sydney Provencher grabbed the gold by taking first place in the foil competition for Guilford. Taylor Smith finished in sixth place, and Sophia Ruser came in eighth place. Libby finished fifth in the saber competition.
Boys’ Fencing
The Indians had another big week that saw them put three more wins in the books. Guilford posted victories versus Cheshire (23-4) and Xavier (16-2) in a meet on Jan. 14 and followed that up with an 18-7 win over Morgan on Jan. 16.
Jack Greiner guided the épée team to an 8-1 win in the contest with Cheshire. Peter Keanna helped the foil team prevail 7-2, while Wilson Guo led the saber squad to an 8-1 victory.
Facing Xavier, Jerry Li delivered a strong performance to help the Indians get the win against the Falcons.
Saber fencer Owen Angkatavanich had an outstanding meet in Guilford’s victory versus Morgan. The Indians’ saber and fencing teams both won by 7-2 scores.
The boys’ JV team took a 15-12 loss to Morgan. Sam Gunderson led the épée squad to an 8-1 victory in the matchup.
Guilford was represented by some fencers at a JV Tournament at North Haven High School on Jan. 19. Carter Leete claimed first place in the foil division on behalf of the Indians. In one of the most dramatic bouts of the day, Leete, who was the No. 27 seed, fell into a 7-0 deficit against top-seeded Tom Valenton of Greenwich in the championship match, but came back to win the gold with a 15-13 victory.
Ryan Kornitsky took sixth place in the foil competition, while Zachary LaBelle finished in seventh place for Guilford. Li took the bronze with a third-place finish in saber. In épée, AJ Rauccio finished fourth, and Gunderson came in seventh place.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team earned a huge win by posting a 96-89 road victory against Amity at the High Plains Community Center on Jan. 14. GNH took first place in all but two events in its win versus Amity. The Warriors secured the victory by winning the 400 freestyle relay in the final event of the meet.
Sophomore Kyle Borrelli recorded a lifetime-best time of 1:16.16 in the 100 breaststroke and also swam a season-best time of 25.83 in the 50 freestyle for GNH versus Amity. Junior Ahmed Anwar swam a lifetime best of 34.22 in the 50 freestyle and did a season best 1:17.18 in the 100 freestyle.
Cameron Cargan turned in a season best of 23.59 in the 50 freestyle with fellow junior Tanner Powell swimming a season-best time of 24.48. Also recording season-best times for the Warriors were senior Stephen Borrelli in the 500 freestyle (5:54.08), junior Alan Penna in the 200 freestyle (2:10.30), freshman Patrick Cucchiarelli in the 200 freestyle (2:17.05) and the 100 butterfly (1:12.14), freshman Lucas Espinosa in the 200 individual medley (2:23.64), freshman Aiden Cohen in the 50 freestyle (24.68), freshman Joey Gould in the 500 freestyle (5:44.71), and freshman RT Trotter in the 100 backstroke (1:17.46).
Wrestling
The Indians finished in seventh place when they competed at the Colter Abely Mid-Season Classic at Xavier High School on Jan. 18.
Ian Rose took first place for Guilford in the 220-pound bracket at the invitational meet. David Koval (113), Ed Barlage (138), and Brent Strand (160) finished second in their respective weight classes. Mohammad Halabi (106), Liam Alberti (126), Kyle Putnam (132), and Zach Halas (182) each finished in third place.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Indians lost to the Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug/Lyman Hall co-op squad by a 3-1 score on Jan. 15. Guilford now has a record of 2-5-1 on the year.
Tyler Considine scored on assists from Tom Ring and Shane Considine for the Indians in last week’s game. Gavyn Litvyn made 23 saves in net.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
Guilford took a 6-4 loss to the Amity-North Haven-Cheshire co-op team in their lone game of the week on Jan. 16. The Indians moved to 3-3 this season with the defeat.
Boys’ Basketball
The Indians lost two games last week and are now 1-5 on the year.
On Jan. 14, Guilford dropped a 74-56 decision to Shelton. John Petonito scored 17 points for the Indians, while Chris Cahill had 15 points in the game. Brayden Santa Barbara turned in an 11-point, 11-rebound effort for Head Coach Jeff DeMaio’s squad.
Two nights later, the Indians lost to Xavier by the final score of 62-58. Petonito and Cahill netted 12 points apiece, and Santa Barbara chipped in with 11 points for Guilford.
