The Morgan wrestling team compete at the Griswold Invitational on Jan. 18. The Huskies came in sixth place as a squad scoring a total of 85 points thanks in part to a pair of first-place finishes from wrestlers Kyle Carse and Louis Bradley.
Carse’s journey to first place in the 106-pound division started with a first round bye. In the quarterfinal, Carse grabbed a win by pin at the 1:05 mark, and then in the semis Carse scored a 5-3 decision to move onto the final bout. N the first place bout, Carse earned a 5-0 decision over Reese Watkins of Statples to take first place.
Louis Bradley competed in the 138 division and started off with a first-round bye. Bradley earned a win by pin at the 1:00 mark in the quarters and another pinfall victory at the 2:34 mark in the semis. Bradley claimed first place with a 7-0 decision versus Quin Rogers of EO Smith in the first-place bout.
Other competitors included Kevin Hicks in the 120 division, who won a first round bout by pin at the 0:56 mark. Hicks lost by pin in the quarterfinal, and ultimately picked up one more win by a 13-0 major decision in the consolation bracket.
David Fortuna made it to the semifinal round of the 170 division with a first-round bye and a win by pin at the 3:30 mark in the quarterfinal. Fortuna lost by pin in the semis. Fortuna got another win by pin at the 4:58 mark in a hard-fought battle in the consolation semis against Connor Blum of Staples. Then Fortuna lost to Justin Brady of Shepard Hill by an 11-6 decision in the third-place bout to earn fourth place.
Evan Baptista of the 126 division, earned a win by pin at the 3:15 mark in the first round, but lost by pin at 0:22 in the quarters. Baptista earned another win by pin in the consolation bracket, but ultimately lost by pinfall in the consolation round of four.
Ryan Hromadka grabbed a first round victory in the 160 division by pinfall at the 0:15 mark. Hromadka lost his quarterfinal bout to drop into the consolation bracket where he scored one more victory by pin at 1:47.
Ethan Reemsnyder competed in the 195 division and earned a win by pin at the 1:29 mark in the first round.
Boys’ Basketball
The Morgan boys’ basketball squad played a pair of games last week and came away with a split on the slate. With these results, the Huskies’ record moved to 7-3 on the season.
On Jan. 13, Morgan posted a 67-50 home win against Hale-Ray. Morgan got out to a 23-17 lead in a high-scoring first quarter. Hale-Ray cleaned up its defensive scheme in the second quarter and outscored the Huskies 16-9 to take a 33-32 lead into the half. Morgan got back on top with a solid defensive effort in the second half. The Huskies outscored the Noises 19-10 in the third quarter and 16-7 in the final frame to take the 67-50 victory.
Robbie Zirlis led Morgan with 21 points, and Zach Johnson scored 18 points in the victory. Jason Cohen supplied 11 points, while Alex Fratamico scored 10.
On Jan. 17, the Huskies lost a 43-31 road contest against Amistad.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional (H-K/M/VR) boys’ swimming and diving team earned its third win of the season in dramatic fashion last week. On Jan. 15, the Cougars hosted the Suffield-East Windsor-Ellington-Windsor Locks co-op squad and prevailed by an 89-81 score after winning the final event of the meet. The team now stands at 3-0 this winter.
The Cougars’ matchup against the Suffield co-op team came down to the 400 freestyle relay, where the quartet of Kyle Mazziotti, Jack Ferguson, Eli Houlton, and Zach Houlton took first place with a time of 3:30.47 to secure the victory.
Zach Houlton also took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:50.50) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.95) for H-K/M/VR. Eli Houlton finished first for the 200 individual medley (2:05.48) and the 100 butterfly (55.49), while Mazziotti earned top honors in the 100 freestyle (51.54) and 100 backstroke (58.42).
The Cougars’ 200 medley relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, Clemente, and Eli Houlton claimed first place with a time of 1:45.86. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Egan Rothrock, Clemente, Connor Levy, and Mazziotti came in first place at 1:38.96.
Ferguson finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.09) and was third in the 500 freestyle (5:25.03). Clemente placed second in the 50 freestyle (25.00) and took third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.07). Rothrock finished third for both the 200 IM (2:17.54) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.01). The Cougars’ 200 medley relay team of Matt Scrowonek, Rothrock, Levy, and AJ Campo de la Vera finished in third place with a mark of 1:56.84.
