Valley Girls’ Basketball Takes Three Defeats; Boys’ Hockey Beats West Haven

Girls’ Basketball

The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team had three games on the slate last week and lost all of them. With the defeats, the Warriors’ record feel to 3-4 on the season.

On Jan. 7, Valley headed to East Hampton and lost a 37-30 contest against the Bellringers. East Hampton got out to a hot start with a 13-6 first quarter, but the Warriors fought back to make it 18-16 by halftime. East Hampton took a 25-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter and added on to make it a 37-30 final score.

Ava Cunningham led the team in scoring with 10 points. Reagan Brenneman added six points, while Alena Crosby had five points. Addi Marchese supplied four points.

The next day, the Warriors lost a 51-45 road contest against Amistad. Valley held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but Amistad would pull ahead 27-23 at the half. Valley closed it to a 33-31 Amistad advantage by the end of the third quarter, but Amistad went on to win 51-45 in the final.

On Jan. 10, the Warriors lost a 46-43 road match up against North Branford.

GymnasticsThe Warriors competed in a meet alongside Jonathan Law, Mercy, and Morgan at Flip Flop Gymnastics on Jan. 10. Valley tallied a score of 113.4 and came in third place out of the four squads competing. Law came in first with a score of 128.05. Mercy took second place with a score of 124.6, and Morgan came in fourth with a mark of 41.10.Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Morgan-Valley Regional-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH) boys’ ice hockey team split a pair of matchups last week. The Yellowjackets lost to North Haven, but rebounded with a victory against West Haven to move to 3-4 this season.

EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH dropped a 3-1 decision versus North Haven at Northford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 9. The Yellowjackets struck first when junior Dave Amatruda found the back of the net on an assist from senior Alec Speirs. However, North Haven scored the final three goals of the game to come away with the win.

On Jan. 11, EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH hit the ice again and claimed a 2-1 victory at West Haven. Senior goalie Logan Hamilton made 49 saves to get the win in net for the Yellowjackets, who were bolstered by goals from Speirs and Parker Sprankle. Sprankle’s goal was assisted by senior Joe Consiglio, while Amatruda had the helper on Speirs’s score.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme girls’ ice hockey team split a pair of recent home games to move to 3-6 this season.

On Jan. 8, the Tigers earned a 2-1 home win over Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug at Northford Ice Pavilion. Three days later, the Tigers hosted Guilford and lost to the Indians by a 7-1 score.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Valley Regional joined forces with Haddam-Killingworth and Morgan to form a co-op boys’ swimming and diving team for the 2019-’20 season. The team earned a 99-69 home victory versus Oxford in its first meet on Dec. 19. Last week, Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional defeated Granby by the final score of 91-75 at H-K High School.

The Cougars were bolstered by a slew of solid performances in their recent win over Granby. Jack Ferguson took first place in the 100 freestyle (1:58.18) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.79) in the victory. Jimmy Clemente finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.11) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.68), while Kyle Mazziotti won the 100 freestyle (50.66) and 100 backstroke (57.12). Also taking first place were Egan Rothrock in the 200 individual medley (2:19.81) and Connor Levy in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.77).

H-K also received first-place finishes from its 200 medley relay of AJ Campo de la Vera, Rothrock, Clemente, and Matt Scowronek (1:58.01); the 200 freestyle relay of Clemente, Levy, Ferguson, and Mazziotti (1:43.92); and the 400 freestyle relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, Levy, and Rothrock (3:47.70). The 200 freestyle relay of Scowronek, Conor Schipritt, Nolan Braren, and Campo de la Vera finished in second place at 2:01.37.

Scowronek took second place in the 50 freestyle (26.79) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.12) at the meet. Levy finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.60. Campo de la Vera placed second in the 200 IM (2:29.80) and was third for the 500 freestyle (7:09.62).
