The Hand boys’ swimming and team traveled to Wallingford to take on Sheehan last week. The Tigers improved to 2-1 on the year by notching a 92-70 victory against the Titans on Jan. 9.
The Tigers saw several first-place finishes in their win over Sheehan. Finishing first in individual events were Rowan O’Connor in the 200 freestyle (2:04.78), Daniel Chen in the 200 individual medley (2:06.28), John Beiner for the 50 freestyle (24.15), William Porter in the 100 butterfly (58.48), Dylan Cassidy in the 500 freestyle (5:37.90), and Jack Signorello in the 100 backstroke (1:01.00). Alex Hauser came in first place for the diving competition with a score of 167.85.
The Tigers also received victories from all three of their relays. The 200 medley relay of Chen, Beiner, Ian Lobby, and Porter finished with a time of 1:49.11; the 200 freestyle relay of Porter, Looby, Chen, and Beiner timed in at 1:36.11; and the 400 freestyle relay featuring Signorello, Looby, Chen, and Porter went a 3:47.14.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Hand improved to 7-0 this year by earning a pair of wins last week. The Tigers defeated Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks 7-1 on Jan. 8 before recording an 11-1 blowout versus North Branford on Jan. 11.
Joey DeAngelis had a hat trick for Hand in the win over the Suffield co-op squad.
Ethan Massey turned in a huge performance against North Branford by scoring five goals to go with two assists. Eric Dilner made seven saves in net for the Tigers. Alex Sciano also saw time in goal and turned aside 11 shots in the victory.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme girls’ ice hockey team split a pair of recent home games to move to 3-6 this season.
On Jan. 8, the Tigers earned a 2-1 home win over Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug at Northford Ice Pavilion. Three days later, the Tigers hosted Guilford and lost to the Indians by a 7-1 score.
Boys’ Basketball
The Tigers lost a pair of contests last week and are now 2-5 on the year. Hand took a 52-40 loss to Wilbur Cross on Jan. 6 and then dropped a 60-42 decision against Shelton on Jan. 10.
Mike Travisano scored 10 points in the Cross game, while Ryan Collins had nine points for the Tigers.
Nick Donofrio scored 15 points for Hand against Shelton. Collins added 12 points on the night.
Gymnastics
Hand started off its season by competing against Foran in a home meet at Jan. 7. The Tigers earned a 121.75-110.15 victory versus the Lions to open the year on a positive note.
Wrestling
The Tigers hosted East Haven for an SCC matchup last week. Hand dropped a 42-33 decision to the Yellowjackets on Jan. 8.
Boys’ Fencing
The Hand boys’ fencing team earned its first varsity sweep against Guilford by posting a 16-11 victory versus the Indians on Jan. 9.
The Tigers’ foil team prevailed by a 5-4 score with senior Michael Hilmer leading the way with three victories. Junior Daniel Ginsburg also went 3-0 on the day to help the saber team claim a 5-4 win over Guilford. The épée squad prevailed by a 6-3 final. Senior Evan Merenda, junior Adam LeBlanc, and sophomore Brian Girardi each contributed two wins to the victory.
The boys’ JV team picked up a 6-3 win in foil with junior Nolan Sherry and freshman Federico Barrera notching two victories apiece. The saber and épée teams took defeats. Sophomore Billy Conroy earned a win in saber, and junior Sina Takyar won two matches in épée.
On Jan. 11, the Tigers traveled to Clinton to compete at the Morgan Invitational. The foil team went undefeated at the meet by beating Morgan, Guilford, Greenwich, and Hopkins. With only one loss on the day, Hilmer improved his record to 18-2 on the season. Senior Finn Byrne improved to 13-6, and junior Luke Newton finished the day with a record 12-7.
The saber team picked up victories against Clinton, Greenwich, and Hopkins, and also took a loss against Guilford. Ginsburg led the way for the saber squad with only two defeats, improving his record to 13-2 on the season. Sophomore Max Wu contributed some key wins to level his record at 7-7.
The épée team gained a split at the meet, gaining victories over Clinton and Greenwich. The team was led by senior Merenda, who improved to 10-5; and sophomore Brian Girardi, who is now 10-3.
Girls’ Fencing
The Tigers squared off with Guilford on Jan. 9 and took a 20-7 defeat to the Indians.
Junior Cameryn Brown posted a record of 2-1 in a 6-3 loss for the foil team. Senior Natalie McCarthy picked up a victory for the saber squad, while junior Sophie Glass went 2-1 for the épée team, which lost by a 3-6 score.
Later in the week, Hand captured three victories at the Morgan Invitational. The Tigers earned wins versus Morgan, Greenwich, and Hopkins to go with a loss against Guilford at the meet.
Brown only had one loss on the day while raising her record to 22-2 this season. The foil team also received key contributions from Nikki Vaccaro (14-12 record) and Violet Johnson (2-1).
The saber squad was led by seniors Natalie McCarthy (8-5) and Maggie Lesnik (7-6), along with sophomore Brigid O’Keefe (3-3).
The épée team was led by senior Ally Lesnik (11-4) and junior Sophie Glassman (11-4), and also received solid showings from Tasha McCarthy (3-1) and Becca Cancelliere (3-1).
