North Haven Girls’ Hoops Nets Two More Wins; Boys Lose to Hamden and Sheehan

Girls’ Basketball

The Indians picked up a couple of victories last week and are now riding a four-game winning streak. North Haven boosted its record to 5-2 after earning home wins versus West Haven and Lauralton Hall in last week’s action.

North Haven started off the week by notching a 57-43 victory against West Haven at Fred Kelly Gymnasium on Jan. 7. The Indians held a 25-22 advantage at halftime and then outscored the Blue Devils 16-8 during the third quarter to take a 41-30 lead into the fourth. North Haven salted away the win by outscoring West Haven 16-13 in the final frame.

Senior Laura Petrafesa scored 16 points and snagged four steals for North Haven. Fellow senior Zoi Burns had 12 points to go with seven rebounds in the win. Sophomore Eveani Okwuosa scored 10 points, junior Carly Fresher had seven points, and junior Sarah Puzone added six points for the Indians. Freshman Emma Liedke contributed to the victory by grabbing five rebounds to go with three steals on the night.

Three days later, the Indians hosted Lauralton Hall and defeated the Crusaders by a 44-26 final. North Haven was up 9-3 after one and took a 26-9 lead into halftime on its way to the win. Petrafesa scored 11 points, while Fresher had a nice all-around game with seven points, four assists, and four rebounds for North Haven. Senior Zoi Burns had six steals with five rebounds and two points, Puzone scored six points and had five rebounds, and Okwuosa had four points, five boards, and a pair of blocks.

Boys’ Basketball

North Haven moved to 5-2 on the year after dropping contests against Hamden and Sheehan last week.

On Jan. 7, the Indians took a 76-69 road loss to Hamden. Senior RJ Hager scored 26 points to lead North Haven. Senior Bryce Charney hit five 3-pointers on his way to scoring 16 points, while fellow senior Dave Christoforo had 13 points in the game. Senior Justin White added six points.

Then on Jan. 9, North Haven hosted Sheehan and lost to the Titans by the final score of 70-61. North Haven was down 19-8 after the first quarter, but rallied to cut the deficit to 47-44 entering the fourth. Sheehan won the fourth quarter by a 23-17 margin to pull away for the win.

Hager had another big game by netting 28 points for the Indians. Christoforo scored 13 points, and senior Joe Vitale had eight points.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team came away with a split of its two games last week to put its record at 7-2-1.

On Jan. 6, the Blades took a 3-2 road loss against Suffield-Ellington-Enfield-Granby-Canton-Windsor-Northwestern at Enfield Twin Rinks.

Then on Jan. 11, A-NH-C posted a 6-2 road victory versus Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. The Blades held a 2-1 lead after the first period and then scored four goals during the second to make it 6-2 through two. Tess Csejka had two goals with two assists, while Haley Cable had a goal and an assist for the Blades. Avery DePodesta, Sami Drane, and Carly Sibert also scored goals in the victory.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team hosted Cheshire for a matchup at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Jan. 9. The Warriors took a 97-88 defeat against the Rams to move to 1-2 this season.
