The Morgan girls’ basketball team had a pair of contests on the slate last week and came away with a win and a loss to their credit. With these results, Morgan’s record on the year moved to 5-3.
On Jan. 6, the Huskies grabbed a 43-41 road win against Coginchaug.
After the first quarter, Morgan held a narrow 11-10 edge over the Blue Devils, and that advantage would remain at halftime with the Huskies leading 25-24. Coginchaug pulled ahead after the third quarter to lead 32-31 heading into the final frame, and Morgan outscored the Blue Devils 12-9 in the fourth to get to the 43-41 final.
Catie Donadio had a great night offensively with 24 points to go along with 10 boards, four assists, two blocks, and four steals. Leah McComiskey added 11 points, six rebounds, and four blocks, while Alex Kelly had seven rebounds and four blocks. Caeley Ayer had seven assists, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
On Jan. 10, Morgan dropped a 48-29 home match up with Cromwell. The Huskies battled with Cromwell for a pretty even first half. Cromwell held a 9-8 lead after the first quarter, and Morgan headed into halftime with a 21-20 advantage. Then the Panthers made some adjustments in the second half that stifled the Huskies’ offense, and Cromwell ran away with the game for the 48-29 win.
Donadio supplied 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Ayer added six points, five steals, and three assists. McComiskey (11 rebounds, 6 blocks) and Kelly (11 rebounds, 4 blocks) both had double-digit rebounds in the loss.
Boys’ Basketball
The Huskies played a pair of games last week and ended up splitting the pair on the slate. The win and loss moved the Huskies record to 6-2 on the season.
On Jan. 6, Head Coach Frank Rossi’s squad notched a 62-58 home win versus Coginchaug. After a 11-11 first quarter, Morgan pulled ahead to lead 27-23 at halftime. The Huskies extended the lead to 47-40 by the end of the third quarter, and they were able to hold on in the fourth to win in a 62-58 final.
Zach Johnson was the primary offensive threat for Morgan, as he went on to score 30 points. Alex Fratemico supplied 13 points, and Jason Cohen added eight points.
Three days later, the Huskies lost a 47-43 road contest against Cromwell. The Panthers held a narrow 11-10 advantage after the first quarter, but the Huskies took a 22-19 lead at the end of the first half. Cromwell took the lead back with a 15-10 third quarter, and that put the Panthers on top 35-32 heading into the final frame. Cromwell held on for the 47-43 final.
Johnson was the leading scorer for Morgan again with 19 points to his credit, and Rob Zirlis added 11 points in the loss. Fratemico scored nine points in the defeat.
Wrestling
The Morgan Wrestling team took a 53-30 win against Notre Dame-West Haven on Jan. 8. Kyle Carse won his match in the 113-pound division by pin at the 1:07 mark. In the 120, Kevin Hicks took his match by a 16-2 decision. Evan Baptista took a win by pin at the 4:27 mark in the 126 division. In the 132, Josh Fragola earned a win by pin at 1:27. In the 145, Louis Bradley took a quick win by pinfall after 20 seconds. In the 152 division, Luke Fruches claimed a win by pinfall in his bout at 1:56 mark. Ryan Hromadka won his match in the 160 with a pin at one minute. In the 170, David Fortuna earned a win by pin at the 3:55 mark. Jordan Armstrong claimed the victory in the 182 at the 3:21 mark.
On Jan. 11, the Huskies competed at the Greater Hartford Open at Hall High School. Morgan took 18th place as a team with a score of 45 points.
Louis Bradley took first place in the 138-pound division. Bradley started with a win by pin over Austin Evan-Holmes of West Hartford at the 1:53 mark. Then, Bradley defeated Joe Auora of Hand by pinfall at 1:02. Next, Bradley got another win by pin over Isaac Bean of Killingly at 2:40. Then to take the division title, Bradley won a 6-0 decision over Benjamin Williams of Haddam-Killingworth.
In the 106-pound division, Kyle Carse earned a win by an 11-4 decisions over Archer Manning of Greenwich. Carse then defeated Jaiden James of Norwich Free Academy by pinfall after 4:58.
In the 152, Luke Furches grabbed a win by pin against Aidan Blair of New Canaan at the 0:36 mark.
Ryan Hromadka grabbed a win in the 160-pound division against Zachary White of Newingtonby a 9-1 decision. In the 170, David Fortuna defeated Samantha Hall of Suffield-Windsor Locks by pinfall at the 0:59 mark.
Gymnastics
The Huskies competed in a meet alongside Jonathan Law, Mercy, and Valley Regional at Flip Flop Gymnastics on Jan. 10. Morgan tallied a score of 41.10 and came in fourth place out of the four squads competing. Law came in first with a score of 128.05. Mercy took second place with a score of 124.6, and Valley Regional came in third with a mark of 113.4.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
Haddam-Killingworth joined forces with Morgan and Valley Regional to form a co-op boys’ swimming and diving team for the 2019-’20 season. The team earned a 99-69 home victory versus Oxford in its first meet on Dec. 19. Last week, Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Valley Regional defeated Granby by the final score of 91-75 at H-K High School.
The Cougars were bolstered by a slew of solid performances in their recent win over Granby. Jack Ferguson took first place in the 100 freestyle (1:58.18) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.79) in the victory. Jimmy Clemente finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.11) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.68), while Kyle Mazziotti won the 100 freestyle (50.66) and 100 backstroke (57.12). Also taking first place were Egan Rothrock in the 200 individual medley (2:19.81) and Connor Levy in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.77).
H-K also received first-place finishes from its 200 medley relay of AJ Campo de la Vera, Rothrock, Clemente, and Matt Scowronek (1:58.01); the 200 freestyle relay of Clemente, Levy, Ferguson, and Mazziotti (1:43.92); and the 400 freestyle relay of Mazziotti, Ferguson, Levy, and Rothrock (3:47.70). The 200 freestyle relay of Scowronek, Conor Schipritt, Nolan Braren, and Campo de la Vera finished in second place at 2:01.37.
Scowronek took second place in the 50 freestyle (26.79) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.12) at the meet. Levy finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.60. Campo de la Vera placed second in the 200 IM (2:29.80) and was third for the 500 freestyle (7:09.62).
