Yellowjackets’ Hockey Edges Out West Haven; Girls’ Hoops Beats Shelton in OT

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Morgan-Valley Regional-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH) boys’ ice hockey team split a pair of matchups last week. The Yellowjackets lost to North Haven, but rebounded with a victory against West Haven to move to 3-4 this season.

EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH dropped a 3-1 decision versus North Haven at Northford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 9. The Yellowjackets struck first when junior Dave Amatruda found the back of the net on an assist from senior Alec Speirs. However, North Haven scored the final three goals of the game to come away with the win.

On Jan. 11, EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH hit the ice again and claimed a 2-1 victory at West Haven. Senior goalie Logan Hamilton made 49 saves to get the win in net for the Yellowjackets, who were bolstered by goals from Speirs and Parker Sprankle. Sprankle’s goal was assisted by senior Joe Consiglio, while Amatruda had the helper on Speirs’s score.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-North Branford-East Haven (B-NB-EH) girls’ ice hockey squad played three games last week and came away with a tie to move to 2-6-1 this season.

On Jan. 8, the Wings played to a 3-3 draw with Wilton-Norwalk-McMahon at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Two days later, the Wings were the road team when they faced off against Guilford at DiLungo Rink. B-NB-EH took a 6-1 loss against the Indians.

The very next day, the Wings hosted Fairfield Ludlowe/Warde and dropped a 3-2 decision.

Girls’ Basketball

East Haven stands at 4-4 after gaining a split of two recent games. The Yellowjackets won an overtime thriller versus Shelton before taking a defeat to Wilbur Cross.

On Jan. 7, East Haven went up against Shelton and prevailed by 53-50 final in overtime. With the two sides locked in a 47-47 tie at the end of regulation, the Easties outscored Shelton by a 6-3 margin in OT to emerge victorious.

Senior captain Alexis Pendziwater drilled seven 3-pointers on her way to scoring 22 points in the win. Junior Taylor Salato had 14 points, and fellow junior Erin Curran contributed nine points to the victory.

Three days later, the Yellowjackets lost to Wilbur Cross by the score of 52-38 in New Haven.

Wrestling

The Easties improved to 4-0 on the year with a 42-33 road victory against Hand last week.

Senior Jessie Borchert prevailed by pin at the 1:32 mark of his 182-pound bout for East Haven. Seniors Alec DiVito (132, 4-2) Tanner DiVito (138, 6-4) won their matches by decision. Earning wins via forfeit were junior Dominic Milano (113), sophomore Frank Papa (120), junior Matt DiVito (126), junior Gunner Horton (220), and sophomore Will Pera (285).

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team hosted Cheshire for a matchup at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Jan. 9. The Warriors took a 97-88 defeat against the Rams to move to 1-2 this season.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Yellowjackets competed at an SCC Developmental meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 6.

Junior Kisha Francois sprinted to victory in the 55-meter dash by clocking in with a time of 7.63 seconds at the meet. Francois also took second place in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet-11 inches to go with a sixth-place finish in the 300 at 45.57 seconds.

Senior Edith Kwadan-Naab placed second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.57 seconds for the Yellowjackets, who saw sophomore Morgan D’Auria earn top-10 finishes in three events. D’Auria placed third in the triple jump (30-8.5), was ninth in the high jump (4-6), and also finished ninth in the pole vault (6-6). Freshman Jessica Urban finished fourth in the high jump (4-8) and took 10th place in the 55 hurdles (10.29) for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Emily Mazzucco finished fifth in the triple jump (28-0.25), and junior Sammie Franceschi placed ninth in the 55 (7.98).

East Haven’s other competitors at the meet included freshman Adriana Franceschi in the 55 (18th, 8.09) and 300 (54th, 51.76), Sammie Franceschi in the 300 (18th, 47.14) and pole vault (11th, 6-0), Mazzucco in the 300 (43rd, 50.69) and high jump (11th, 4-6), sophomore Juliana Espinoza in the 1,600 (20th, 6:21.03), and sophomore Princess Aggrey in the shot put (26th, 24-0.25).
