The Hand boys’ ice hockey squad picked up four victories during recent action and is now 5-0 to begin its campaign.
The Tigers hosted Milford on Dec. 20 and netted a 5-2 victory at Northford Ice Pavilion. Two days later, Hand traveled to Rhode Island to face Mount Saint Charles Academy and prevailed by a 4-3 final in overtime.
On Dec. 28, the Tigers earned a 6-3 road win over the Eastern CT Eagles at Connecticut College. Then on Jan. 4, Hand posted a 5-1 home victory against E.O. Smith-Tolland to improve to 5-0.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme (H-C-VR-OL) girls’ ice hockey team recently earned its second win of the season and then took three defeats to move to 2-5 on the year.
The Tigers notched a 3-2 road victory versus Branford-North Branford-East Haven at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink in Dec. 21. Two days after that, they took a 6-1 home loss against Hamden-Wilbur-Cross-Lyman Hall at Northford Ice Pavilion.
Then on Dec. 28, H-C-VR-OL dropped a 4-0 decision to Amity-North Haven-Cheshire at Lou Astorino Ice Arena. On Jan. 4, the Tigers lost to Avon-Southington-RHAM-Newington-Lewis Mills by a 5-0 score in a home game.
Girls’ Basketball
The Tigers improved to 4-2 this winter after winning three of their last five matchups.
Hand went on the road and secured a 55-50 victory at Sheehan on Dec. 20. Then on Dec. 23, the Tigers took a 63-31 road loss versus E.O. Smith.
On Dec. 27, Hand opened play in the Notre Dame-Fairfield Holiday Tournament by taking a 68-64 loss against the host Lancers. The next day, the Tigers routed Thomaston by a 51-25 score in their next game of the tourney. Then on Jan. 3, Hand hosted Guilford and netted a 48-36 victory against the Indians.
Boys’ Basketball
Hand is off to a 2-3 start to the 2019-’20 winter season. The Tigers claimed wins versus East Lyme and Guilford and also took three defeats during the first two weeks of their campaign.
Hand dropped a 50-47 decision at North Haven in its season opener on Dec. 19. Two days later, the Tigers lost by a 62-49 final in a game at Old Lyme.
Hand got in the win column on Dec. 27, when the Tigers edged out East Lyme by a 50-49 score in a home game. Three days after that, Hand took a 75-42 loss at Norwich Free Academy. The Tigers finished off the stretch by posting a 63-52 home victory against Guilford on Jan. 3.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Tigers came away with a split of their first two meets of the season.
On Dec. 19, Hand took a 94-90 defeat against the Greater New Haven Warriors at Walter Gawrych Community Pool in North Haven. Then on Jan. 2, the Tigers prevailed by a 96-76 score in a road meet versus Hamden.
William Porter won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle in the meet with Hamden. Dylan Cassidy took first place in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, while Daniel Chen won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.
The Tigers’ 200 medley relay of Chen, Rowan O’Connor, Porter, and John Beiner came in first place with a time of 1:50.33. The 200 freestyle relay of Beiner, O’Connor, Ian Looby, and Chen finished first at 1:37.65. The 400 freestyle relay of Jack Signorello, Finnian Hamblett, Joseph Starkey, and Porter turned in a strong time of 3:45.83.
Boys’ Fencing
Hand kicked off its season by competing in a foil meet at the North Branford Invitational. The Tigers scored victories over Marine Science (6-3), Lyme-Old Lyme (7-2), and North Branford (7-2) before taking a 5-4 loss to Amity at the meet.
Senior Michel Hilmer went 6-1 on the day, while senior Finn Byne (4-2) and junior Luke Newtown (6-3) also put forth solid showings for the Tigers.
Hand’s JV team went 2-2 on the day. Sophomore Nolan Sherry finished with a record of 5-1, and freshman Federico Barrera was 4-2 at the competition.
Girls’ Fencing
The Tigers went to the North Branford Invitational for a foil meet last week. Hand went undefeated on the day by earning wins versus North Branford (7-2), Lyme-Old Lyme (6-3), and Marine Science (5-4).
Cameryn Brown had a big day by going 9-0 for Hand at the invitational.
The Tigers’ JV squad notched a 5-4 win over Marine Science at the meet. Junior Alexa Betts finished the day with a record of 2-1.
