Guilford Girls’ Hoops, Hockey Get First Victories; Wrestling Off to a Solid Start

Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team posted a win over Avon to go with three defeats during the first two weeks of its campaign. The Indians have a record of 1-3 on the season.

Guilford started off its season by dropping a 39-37 home game against Lyman Hall on Dec. 20. Mia Diaz scored 11 points for the Indians, while Sam Leiby chipped in with eight points. Elle Petra and Kat Baseggio each had nine rebounds.

Three days later, the Indians hosted Wilbur Cross and lost by a 51-31 final. Petra and Bsseggio scored six points apiece.

Then on Dec. 30, the Indians got in the win column when they netted a 40-21 road victory against Avon. Moira Kellaher had 12 points and nine steals for Guilford.

On Jan. 3, Guilford took a 48-36 road loss to Hand. Faith O’Donnell scored seven points for the Indians in the game.

Boys’ Basketball

The Indians took defeats in their first two contests of the 2019-’20 campaign.

On Dec. 19, Guilford lost to Xavier by a 60-36 score on the road in its season opener. Senior captain John Petonito scored 14 points to lead the Indians.

The Indians were back on the road for their next game and took a 63-52 defeat at Hand on Jan. 3. Senior Chris Cahill scored 21 points, while Petonito added 12 points on the night.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

Guilford moved to 1-2 on the year after coming away with a split of its last two games.

On Dec. 21, Guilford earned a 5-4 home victory against Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Maddie Epke scored four goals for the Indians, while Kimberly Evans also netted a goal. Daniella Vickerman handed out a pair of assists. Julia McDonald made 25 saves to get the win in net.

Following the holiday break, the Indians returned to action on Jan. 3 and took a 6-2 road loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton. Vickerman and Epke scored the goals for the Indians, who saw McDonald make 25 saves.

Wrestling

Guilford is off to a 6-1 start to its season and has also competed at a couple of invitational meets.

The Indians took third place when they hosted the Guilford Invitational on Dec. 21. John Fernandes (106 pounds), Ed Barlage, (138) and Ian Rose (220) all earned second-place finishes for Guilford at the meet.

On Dec. 27, the Indians competed at the Framingham Invitational in Massachusetts and came in sixth place out of 27 teams. Mohammad Halabi (106), Brent Strand (160), and Rose each finished in second place.

On Jan. 4, Guilford finished in first place at the Whippet Invitational at Windham High School. The Indians took the title by earning wins over East Lyme (64-15), E.O. Smith (57-24), Waterford (54-30), and Windham (40-36). Kyle Putnam claimed a pinfall victory in the 132-pound class to solidify the title for Guilford.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving squad is 1-1 to start the season after defeating Hand and losing to Fairfield Prep in its first two meets.

The Warriors opened their season by earning a 94-90 home win against Hand at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Dec. 19. Then on Jan. 2, GNH hosted Fairfield Prep and took a defeat by the score of 96-85.

GNH saw a few swimmers record lifetime-best times during their two meets last week. Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam lifetime-best marks in both the 100 breaststroke (1:18.64) and the 50 freestyle (25.64) for the Warriors. Junior Cameron Cargan swam a lifetime best in the 200 freestyle (2:00.98), while senior Steven Borrelli did so in the 100 butterfly (1:08.79). Freshman Patrick Cucchiarelli posted a lifetime-best time of 1:00.31 in the 100 freestyle.

Several athletes recorded season-best times between the two meets. Freshman Aiden Cohen swam season bests in the 200 freestyle (2:00.08), the 100 freestyle (54.39), and the 100 butterfly, (1:02.93), while fellow freshmen Spencer Carroll went season bests in the 200 individual medley (2:22.75), the 100 butterfly (1:05.45), and the 100 breaststroke (1:12.73). Also turning season-best times were sophomore Finn Henry in the 200 freestyle (1:45.94) and 500 freestyle (4:51.05), Cargan in the 50 freestyle (23.69), junior Daniel Kamen in the 200 freestyle (1:58.10) and 500 freestyle (5:27.06), Evan Laughlin in the 50 freestyle (25.05) and 100 freestyle (58.15), freshman Lucas Espinosa for the 100 backstroke (1:06.58), and sophomore Hethon Foster in the 200 IM (2:06.14), the 100 butterfly (54.18), and the 100 backstroke (1:00.46).

The following athletes also posted season-best marks for GNH: junior Connor Coyne in the 200 IM (2:07.13) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.38), junior David Zhang for the 200 IM (2:18.22) and 100 backstroke (1:00.47), senior Aidan Henry in the 50 freestyle (22.51) and the 100 freestyle (48.77), junior Tanner Powell in the 50 freestyle (25.01), and freshman Joey Gould for the 100 butterfly (1:09.20), 100 backstroke (1:08.07), and the 100 freestyle (58.51).
