East Haven’s Hockey Squads Get a Pair of Wins; Wrestling Starts Season with Three Victories

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Morgan-Valley Regional-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH) boys’ ice hockey team came away with a split of its last four games to move to 2-3 this season. The Yellowjackets earned victories against Staples and Watertown-Pomperaug, while losing contests to Westhill-Stamford and Farmington Valley in recent action.

On Dec. 21, EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH earned a 4-2 home victory over Staples at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Junior Dave Amatruda opened the game by scoring a pair of goals for the Yellowjackets. Senior Alec Speirs had assists on both of the goals. Junior Cory Benni also had an assist on the first goal, and junior Rocco Plano assisted on the second one.

Senior Joe Consiglio made it 3-0 when he scored on Speirs’s third assist of the game late in the second period. In the third period, sophomore Michael Robert scored on an assist from Benni. Senior Logan Hamilton made 28 saves to get the win in net.

The Yellowjackets returned to the ice on Dec. 28, when they lost a 2-0 contest to Westhill-Stamford. Hamilton made 25 saves in the game.

On Dec. 30, EH-OL-OS-M-VR-EH dropped an 8-2 decision against Farmington Valley. Then on Jan. 4, the Yellowjackets rebounded when they claimed a 4-1 victory versus Watertown-Pomperaug. Amatruda and Speirs scored two goals apiece in the win. Hamilton made 44 saves between the pipes.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-North Branford-East Haven (B-NB-EH) girls’ ice hockey team picked up two recent victories to move to 2-4 on the season.

On Dec. 21, the Wings took a 3-2 home loss to Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Two days later, B-NB-EH earned its first win of the season with a 6-2 road victory over Trumbull-St. Joseph at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton.

Then on Dec. 28, the Wings defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Foran/Weston/Pomperaug by a 6-2 final in a home game. B-NB-EH finished off its week by dropping a 3-2 home game versus Suffield-Ellington-Enfield- Granby-Canton-Windsor-Northwestern on Jan. 4.

Wrestling

East Haven won its first three matches of the season by notching victories against Law, Guilford, and Griswold to open the year.

The Easties visited Law on Dec. 26 and prevailed by the final score of 70-12. Winning via pin for East Haven was junior Dominic Milano in the 106-pound weight class at the 0:32 mark, along senior Alec DiVito (132, 3:05), sophomore Jake Ortiz (152, 0:48), senior Fabricio Bugatti (160, 1:30), junior Danny Clough (182, 4:35), senior Vincenzo Bunce (195, 2:16), junior Gunner Horton (220, 2:16), and freshman Chris Devlin (285, 1:08).

Senior Tanner DiVito earned a 16-5 win by decision in the 138-pound weight class, while sophomore Frank Papa (113), sophomore Issac Florentino (120), and junior Matt DiVito (126) each won via forfeit.

On Jan. 2, East Haven hosted Guilford and earned a 39-30 victory versus the Indians. Winning by pin were Matt DiVito (126, 1:18), sophomore Dylan Tavares (145, 3:34), and Bunce (195, 1:12). East Haven also saw five wrestlers win by decision: Milano (106, 15-8), Alec DiVito (132, 6-5), Tanner DiVito (138, 7-5), Bugatti (170, 3-1), and Clough (182, 10-4).

The Yellowjackets wrapped up last week with a 72-12 win at Griswold on Jan. 4. Matt DiVito (126, 3:54), Tavares (138, 1:23), Tanner DiVito (145, 0:30), sophomore Mike Pagan (152, 1:29), and Bugatti (160, 1:14) all prevailed by pin for the Easties. Milano (106), Alec DiVito (132), senior Jessie Borchert (170), Clough (182), Bunce (195), Horton (220), and William Pera (285) recorded wins on forfeits.

Girls’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets stand at 3-3 through the first two weeks of their season. In recent action, East Haven posted victories over East Lyme, Hamden, and Branford to go with losses against Newington and Greenwich.

After losing to New London in its opener, East Haven rebounded with a 46-39 victory at East Lyme on Dec 23. Following a brief break, the Yellowjackets took a 57-46 loss to Newington on Dec. 27 and then lost to Greenwich by a 52-42 score the following day.

The Easties came back with a 61-39 win at Hamden on Dec. 30 and followed that up by netting a 63-26 victory against Branford on Jan. 3.

Boys’ Basketball

East Haven is 0-4 after dropping its first four contests of the campaign.

The Yellowjackets started their year by taking a 49-34 home loss versus Branford on Dec. 19. They then lost a 57-39 decision at Innovation on Dec. 27.

Three days later, East Haven took a 66-58 defeat against Achievement. On Jan. 3, the Yellowjackets lost to Shelton by a 57-31 score.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving squad is 1-1 to start the season after defeating Hand and losing to Fairfield Prep in its first two meets.

The Warriors opened their season by earning a 94-90 home win against Hand at Walter Gawrych Community Pool on Dec. 19. Then on Jan. 2, GNH hosted Fairfield Prep and took a defeat by the score of 96-85.

GNH saw a few swimmers record lifetime-best times during their two meets last week. Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam lifetime-best marks in both the 100 breaststroke (1:18.64) and the 50 freestyle (25.64) for the Warriors. Junior Cameron Cargan swam a lifetime best in the 200 freestyle (2:00.98), while senior Steven Borrelli did so in the 100 butterfly (1:08.79). Freshman Patrick Cucchiarelli posted a lifetime-best time of 1:00.31 in the 100 freestyle.

Several athletes recorded season-best times between the two meets. Freshman Aiden Cohen swam season bests in the 200 freestyle (2:00.08), the 100 freestyle (54.39), and the 100 butterfly, (1:02.93), while fellow freshmen Spencer Carroll went season bests in the 200 individual medley (2:22.75), the 100 butterfly (1:05.45), and the 100 breaststroke (1:12.73).

Also turning season-best times were sophomore Finn Henry in the 200 freestyle (1:45.94) and 500 freestyle (4:51.05), Cargan in the 50 freestyle (23.69), junior Daniel Kamen in the 200 freestyle (1:58.10) and 500 freestyle (5:27.06), Evan Laughlin in the 50 freestyle (25.05) and 100 freestyle (58.15), freshman Lucas Espinosa for the 100 backstroke (1:06.58), and sophomore Hethon Foster in the 200 IM (2:06.14), the 100 butterfly (54.18), and the 100 backstroke (1:00.46).

The following athletes also posted season-best marks for GNH: junior Connor Coyne in the 200 IM (2:07.13) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.38), junior David Zhang for the 200 IM (2:18.22) and 100 backstroke (1:00.47), senior Aidan Henry in the 50 freestyle (22.51) and the 100 freestyle (48.77), junior Tanner Powell in the 50 freestyle (25.01), and freshman Joey Gould for the 100 butterfly (1:09.20), 100 backstroke (1:08.07), and the 100 freestyle (58.51).
