Both Westbrook tennis teams enjoyed solid seasons during the spring, while the fall featured another quality campaign from the Knights’ field hockey squad. In the winter, Savannah Marshall finished up an outstanding career with the Westbrook girls’ basketball team. Let’s take a look at the year in Westbrook sports.
Winter
The Westbrook girls’ basketball team saw Savannah Marshall play her final season as a Knight in the winter of 2019. Westbrook qualified for the Class S State Tournament and posted an overall record of 9-13.
Marshall, a senior captain guard, scored 1,421 points during her Westbrook career to finish with the fourth most points in program history and the fifth most in school history. She also had 531 rebounds and 404 steals in her four seasons with Westbrook. Marshall earned All-Shoreline Conference honors four times and was selected to the All-State and New Haven Register All-Area teams three times.
Avery Bauman turned in a strong showing for Westbrook by taking second place in the 1,000-meter run at the Shoreline Conference Girls’ Indoor Track Championship. The senior captain recorded a time of 3:26.47 to finish second in the event. Bauman also ran with Brooke Neri, Marguerite Bartlett, and Cierra Brundage on the Knights’ third-place 4x800 relay (11:23.66).
Michael Gingras finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet-4 inches for Westbrook at the Shoreline Conference Boys’ Indoor Track Championship.
Garrett Smith represented Westbrook boys’ swimming by competing in the Nutmeg Conference Championship and the Class S State Championship. Smith took third place in the 200 individual medley (2:05.67) and the 100 butterfly (55.00) at Nutmegs. In states, Smith claimed sixth place in the 200 individual medley (2:03.41) and finished seventh in the 100 butterfly (54.32).
The Westbrook boys’ basketball team made it into the Shoreline Conference Tournament this year. The Knights lost a quarterfinal contest versus Cromwell and finished at 6-15 overall.
Spring
The Westbrook boys’ tennis team finished with a record of 16-4 in 2019, improving by 10 wins from the previous season. Head Coach Dan Shapiro’s squad earned second place in the Shoreline Conference and saw some impressive performances from its players in the postseason.
Senior captain Nate Comment went 16-1 at the No. 1 singles position. Comment made it to the final of the Shoreline Conference Singles Tournament and reached the quarterfinals of the singles bracket at Class S State Championship. Sophomores Cooper Whitehouse (13-6) and Jesse McGannon (12-6) had strong years at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions, respectively. Freshman Joey Caslin went 16-3 at No. 5 singles.
The Knights’ girls’ tennis team netted a 15-6 record in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Senior captain Sara Farnoli went 20-0 during the regular season and then won the Shoreline Conference Tournament No. 1-2 Singles Tournament. Farnoli also competed in the State Open on behalf of the Knights.
The Westbrook baseball team qualified for the Class S State Tournament with a late-season surge in 2019. After starting out at 3-11, the Knights finished the regular season on a six-game win streak to make states.
Senior captain Connor Cruz batted .435 for Westbrook. On the mound, Cruz posted a 1.75 ERA to go with 39 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. Fellow senior Quinn Ernst batted .338 and had 21 RBI. Senior Cameron Marshall went 3-2 with 36 strikeouts in 43 innings.
Senior captain Avery Bauman broke Westbrook’s school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.87 during a tri-meet versus Morgan and Haddam-Killingworth. At the Shoreline Conference Championship, senior Kelly Donlan claimed first place in the shot put (33-9.25) and took second place in the discus (80-9). Then at the Class S State Championship, Donlan earned fourth place in the shot put with a distance of 32-11.
Fall
The Westbrook field hockey team put together another successful season in 2019. The Knights reached the Shoreline Conference Tournament final and the Class S State Tournament semifinals on their way to an overall record of 15-3-3.
Junior goalie Lauren Horne played a huge part in Westbrook’s success by recording 14 shutouts on the season, including two in states, while allowing just 10 total goals. Westbrook was led by senior captains Olivia Hartzell, Lexi Koplas, Kendall Orlowski, and Alex Young. Other key contributors included juniors Megan Greaves, Brooke Neri, Bailey Roberts, and Cierra Brundage, as well as sophomore Gabriella Koplas and freshman Delaney Belacourt.
The Westbrook boys’ soccer squad qualified for the Class S State Tournament this year. The Knights finished the season with an overall mark of 6-10-1.
