Valley Girls’ Hoops Off to 2-0 Start; Hockey Squad Drop Contests

The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team opened up its season by posting a pair of statement wins last week. The Warriors prevailed against two Shoreline Conference opponents to jump out to a 2-0 start in Head Coach Jaimie Toto’s first year with the program.

On Dec. 16, the Warriors had their home opener and hosted Coginchaug. The comparatively undersized Valley team was able to secure a 38-33 win at home versus the Blue Devils. Addi Marchese and Alena Crosby both led the Warriors in scoring with 11 points.

Two days later, Valley hosted Morgan and claimed a 44-32 win over the Huskies. Marchese and Crosby once against tied for the team lead in scoring, this time with 13 points to each of their credit.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Clinton-Valley Regional-East Hampton ice hockey team squared off against New Milford in its season opener last week. The Yellowjackets took a 3-2 road loss to the Green Wave at the Canterbury School on Dec. 18.

Old Lyme senior Alec Speirs and Valley Regional junior Cormac Kline scored the goals for the Yellowjackets in the defeat. New Milford scored a goal in the first period to take an early lead, and then the two sides traded goals in the second. Kline netted the first goal on an assist from Old Saybrook junior Cory Benni in the second period.

The teams traded goals once more in the third period. East Hampton sophomore Josh Berg assisted on Speirs’s goal during the frame. East Haven senior Logan Hamilton made 50 saves between the pipes for the Yellowjackets in the game.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley Regional-Old Lyme girls’ ice hockey squad played a road game against West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy on Dec. 18. The Tigers took a 6-0 defeat in the matchup at Bennett Rink in West Haven. The team moved to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
