North Branford Girls’ Hoops Routs Hale-Ray in Opener; Boys’ Hockey Takes a Loss

Girls’ Basketball

The North Branford girls’ basketball team started its season by posting a 65-16 blowout at Hale-Ray on Dec. 18. The Thunderbirds grabbed a 21-6 lead after one and brought a 41-9 advantage into halftime on their way to the rout.

Sophomore Braeden LeBeau led the way with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks for North Branford. Sophomore Hanna Senerchia had 10 points and seven steals, while sophomore Marissa Ricardo scored nine points. Junior Erica Piercey contributed four steals, five assists, and four rebounds in the T-Birds’ winning effort.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

North Branford took a 6-3 defeat to Westhill- Stamford in its season opener at Terry Conners Ice Rink on Dec. 18.

The T-Birds netted the first goal of the game when junior Luciano Palma scored from fellow junior Tyler Waligroski. Westhill-Stamford scored the next two goals of the game to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.

North Branford tied the score midway through the second on senior Joe Carbone’s goal from sophomore Ryan Michonski. The Thunderbirds gave up two quick goals after that, but senior Jack Michonski came back with a goal for North Branford to make it 4-3.

Westhill-Stamford went on to score a pair of goals in third period to finish out the 6-3 win. Junior goalie Tyler DiNapoli made 38 saves for the Thunderbirds.
