Mayo Wins the 200 Freestyle for the Indians at States

Senior Alex Mayo capped off her high school swimming career as a state champion by taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle at the Class M State Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 20. Mayo and her teammates on the Guilford girls’ swimming squad scored 256 points to finish in ninth place out of 20 teams that competed at the state meet.

Mayo swam a personal-best, school-record time of 1:56.48 on her way to winning the 200 freestyle at states. Mayo followed up her victory by turning in another All-State performance in the 100 freestyle, where she took third place with a personal-best mark of 53.82.

Mayo finished her career as a two-time All-State performer for Guilford. She holds school records in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, and the 100 butterfly, in addition to anchoring three school-record relays (200 medley, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle). Mayo also qualified to compete at the State Open in all four years of her career.

Mayo helped Guilford break those school records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the recent Class M meet. In the 200, the Indians’ team of freshman Mia Amasino, freshman Grace Young, junior Haley Moriarty, and Mayo finished in fourth place with a school-record time of 1:45.28. The 400 also came in fourth place while breaking a school record. Guilford’s quartet of Moriarty, freshman Alyssa Simione, Young, and Mayo clocked in with a time of 3:47.24 to set the record. Guilford’s 200 medley relay team of Simione, freshman Ryan Jacobson, Amasino, and sophomore Brynn Leslie came in 12th place with a time of 2:05.61.

For individual events, Young claimed seventh place in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.72) and finished 12th for the 200 IM (2:21.42). Moriarty took 14th place in the 100 freestyle (56.85) and was 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.87).

Simione finished 19th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:08.93, while Leslie placed 23rd in the 500 freestyle (5:59.48) for the Indians. Jacobson took 21st place in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.66) and finished 24th for the 200 IM with a 2:34.78.
