Guilford Boys’ Soccer Loses to Hand on PKs in State Semis


The Guilford boys’ soccer team took a 2-1 loss to Hand in a contest that was decided on penalty kicks in the Class L State Tournament semifinals. The Indians finished their campaign with an overall record of 15-2-6.

No. 8 seed Guilford played No. 4 Hand in the Class L semifinals at Middletown High School on Nov. 18. Hand claimed a 2-1 victory by defeating the Indians by a 4-3 score on penalty kicks. Guilford had recently beat Hand in the SCC final after the two teams played to a pair of ties during the regular season.

Hand scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute and was up 1-0 at halftime. In the second half, senior Devlin Ahlefeld scored a goal on an assist from junior Evan Lemon to tie it at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.

The game stayed tied through the rest of regulation and two overtime periods, sending it to penalty kicks. Junior Anthony Ippolito, Lemon, and junior Niall O’Brien scored goals for the Indians during the PK session. However, Hand was able to score four goals to come away with the win and advance to the final after Guilford missed on its last two attempts.

Guilford had qualified for the Class L State Tournament by finishing the regular season with a record of 9-1-6. The Indians earned a 1-0 win over No. 25 seed Foran in the first round, defeated No. 24 Masuk by a 4-0 final in a second-round game, and then posted a 1-0 win versus top-seeded Bristol Eastern in the quarterfinals in order to advance to the semis.

Prior to states, the Indians won the SCC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. Guilford recorded a 2-1 overtime victory against Wilbur Cross in the quarterfinals, beat Xavier by a 2-1 score after winning 4-2 on penalty kicks in the semifinals, and then earned a 1-0 victory against Hand in the championship game.
