Old Lyme-Valley-Saybrook Swimming Places 6th at States


The Old Lyme-Valley Regional-Old Saybrook (OL-VR-OS) co-op girls’ swimming and diving team finished in sixth place at the Class M State Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 20. The Wildcats scored 334.5 points to finish sixth among the 20 teams that participated in the meet. North Haven took the title by scoring 622 points to place ahead of defending champion Hand, which came in second place with 599.5 points scored.

The top performance for OL-VR-OS at states came from its 400 freestyle relay team. The quartet of freshman Laura Day, junior Helen Day, junior Connie Pan, and sophomore Grace Sweeney finished in third place by recording a time of 3:45.80 at the meet.

The 200 medley relay of Pan, Helen Day, Sweeney, and sophomore Loretta Cecchini claimed fourth place with a mark of 1:55.81. In the 200 freestyle relay, the unit of freshman Makenna Harms, sophomore Zoe Cika, Cecchini, and Laura Day posted a time of 1:48.27 to take eighth place.

Sweeney finished in eighth place in a pair of individual events at the State Championship. In the 200 freestyle, Sweeney placed eighth by swimming a time of 2:04.91. Later in the meet, she took eighth place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.73.

Helen Day finished eighth for the 200 IM (2:20.43) and placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.24) for OL-VR-OS. Pan took eighth place in the 50 freestyle (25.41) and was 11th in the 100 freestyle (56.43). Cecchini came in 12th place for both the 50 freestyle (26.24) and the 100 freestyle (56.24).

Cika finished in 17th place for the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.33 at states. Laura Day finished 18th in 200 freestyle (2:07.43) and also took 18th in the 100 butterfly (1:05.30). Harms came in 19th place in the 100 backstroke by timing in at 1:06.12.

Freshman Elly Rothrock finished 20th in the 200 IM (2:26.49) and placed 23rd in the 100 butterfly (1:08.89). Fellow freshman Lauren Lee took 20th in the 500 freestyle (5:52.26) and was 22nd for the 100 backstroke (1:07.19). Freshman Madelyn Beaudoin finished 23rd in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.88.
