Branford Swims to 7th Place at States

The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team finished in seventh place when the Hornets competed at the Class M State Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 20. The Hornets scored 287 points to finish out of the 20 teams that participated in the meet. North Haven took the title by scoring 622 points to place ahead of defending champion Hand, which came in second place with 599.5 points scored.

Sophomore Erika Barone posted a pair of sixth-place finishes for Branford at the State Championship. Barone took sixth place in the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 2:18.54. In the 100 backstroke, she swam a time of 1:03.86 to come in sixth place. Previously, at the SCC Championship, Barone had finished 11th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.12 and took 12th place in the 200 IM at 2:16.73.

Senior Gabby Gills finished in the top 10 of two events at states. Gillis claimed seventh place in the 100 freestyle (55.42) and placed ninth in the 50 freestyle (25.51) for the Hornets.

Branford’s 200 medley relay team of junior Melissa Juliano, Barone, senior Cordelia Keberle, and Gillis recorded with a time of 1:56.58 to take sixth place. The 400 freestyle relay featuring Gillis, Keberle, Juliano, and Barone took ninth place with a time of 3:47.37.

Senior Adrienne Dillon finished eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:04.21) and placed 14th for the 200 freestyle (2:07.01) at the Class M meet. Juliano took 10th place in the 100 backstroke (1:04.11) and finished 18th in the 50 freestyle (26.54). Keberle finished in 13th place for both the 200 freestyle (2:06.35) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.71).

Branford’s 200 freestyle relay of junior Katherine Parsell, sophomore Rory Jacobson, junior Nicola Colossale, and Dillon finished 14th with a time of 1:54.39. Parsell placed 22nd in the 200 IM (2:34.10), while Jacobson finished 24th in the 100 butterfly (1:09.73).
