H-K Girls’ Volleyball Makes Class M Semifinals; Girls’ Soccer Loses in Second Round

Girls’ Volleyball

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ volleyball squad earned victories in its first three matches of the Class M State Tournament to send the Cougars into the semifinal round. H-K defeated Career (3-0), Prince Tech (3-1), and Bacon Academy (3-0) to punch its ticket to the state semifinals, while improving to 15-10 overall this year. The Cougars are playing Waterford in the semis this week.

No. 15 seed H-K opened up the state draw by claiming a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 27-25) home win over Career in first-round action on Nov. 11.

Two days later, the Cougars posted a 3-1 (25-15, 25-11, 24-26, 25-15) road victory against No. 2 Prince Tech in a second-round contest.

On Nov. 15, H-K hosted No. 23 Bacon Academy in the quarterfinals and prevailed by the final score of 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-10).

H-K faced No. 11 seed Waterford in the Class M semifinals at Fitch High School on Nov. 19 (after press time). If the Cougars win, they will play the winner of top-seeded Seymour and No. 12 Weston in the state final at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.

Football

H-K took a 26-15 road loss against Stafford-East Windsor-Somers at Stafford High School on Nov. 15. The Cougars are now 1-7 on the year.

Dalton Modehn gave the Cougars an early lead when he scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Kevin Cavrell kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. Modehn’s TD run was set up by a 29-yard pass completion from quarterback Alex Riccitelli to Anthony Corda.

Riccitelli broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds left in the first half. Andrew Wiese ran for the 2-point conversion to give H-K a 15-7 lead at halftime.

Stafford-East Windsor-Somers scored three touchdowns during the second half and went on to get the victory.

Modehn had 13 rushes for 50 yards for the Cougars. Wiese had three receptions for 25 yards, and Corda caught a pair of passes for 42 yards.

H-K is hosting Coventry-Windham-Tech-Bolton-Lyman Memorial (2-7) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21. After that, the Cougars will conclude the season with their annual game against Pequot Conference Sassacus Division rival Valley-Regional Old Lyme on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The game gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at Haddam-Killingworth High School.

Girls’ Soccer

The Cougars were victorious in the first game of the Class M State Tournament and then took a defeat in a second-round contest. H-K finished with an overall record of 15-5-1 in a campaign that saw the squad capture the Shoreline Conference title.

On Nov. 12, No. 11 H-K hosted No. 22 Waterford and earned a 2-1 win in the first round of the State Tournament. Leah Sosnowski scored both goals for the Cougars during the second half of the victory. Kelsey Lonergan made 14 saves in net.

Two days later, H-K lost a 6-1 contest against No. 6 seed Lewis Mills in the second round. With H-K trailing 4-0 at halftime, Autumn Walton scored a goal from Rebecca Fisher to put the Cougars on the board.
