Three Morgan Squads Take Losses in States

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team’s season came to a close last week with a loss in the Class M State Tournament quarterfinal against Ellington. The Huskies had picked up victories in the first round against Ansonia and in the second round versus Watertown, before taking the 3-1 loss to Ellington. Morgan finished the season with a final overall record of 15-3-3.

On Nov. 11, the 8th-seeded Huskies earned a 7-0 victory versus No. 25 seed Ansonia. Morgan hosted Ansonia at the Indian River Complex and quickly established a solid lead. Zach Tuccitto picked up four goals to his credit, and Sebastian Salgar, Sean Cafferty, and Andrew Daly tallied the other three scores. Matt Gardner and Justin Castro each added two assists, while Salgar and Max Skidmore had an assist apiece. Nick Rubino made three saves in net.

Tuccitto scored the first goal in the 14th minute off an assist from Castro, and Salgar made it 2-0 off a Skidmore helper. Tuccitto added another goal in 41st minute on an assist from Gardner for the 3-0 lead. Tuccitto added another goal in the 56th minute on another Garnder assist, then finished up his scoring attack in the 64th minute on another Salgar helper. Cafferty notched an unassisted goal in the 68th minute, and Daly scored the final goal of the game in the 74th minute on an assist from Castro to make it 7-0.

Two days later, Morgan hosted No. 9 seed Watertown and claimed a 3-1 home victory. The Huskies scored first when Salgar scored a goal the was assisted by Tuccitto and Skidmore to make it 1-0. That score remained until after the intermission when Watertown tied the game 1-1 in the 51st minute.

Tuccitto gave Morgan the lead in the 69th minute off a helper from Skidmore, Cafferty scored an insurance goal two minutes later off an assist from Tyler Mucha for the 3-1 final. Rubino made 10 saves manning the net.

On Nov. 15, Morgan hit the road to face No. 1 seed Ellington and dropped a 3-1 contest. Ellington came out strong, scoring on a corner kick four minutes into the game to make it 1-0. Tuccitto tied the game in the 30th minute off an assist from Sebastian Kadloff. Ellington would go on to score in the 48th and 53rd minutes to build the 3-1 advantage that ultimately held. Rubino made seven saves including some big ones to keep the Huskies alive through the first half and into the second.

Girls Soccer

The Huskies lost their first round matchup against Watertown in the Class M State Tournament to finish out the 2019 campaign. Morgan entered the tournament as the No. 23 seed and had to take on the No. 10 seed Watertown to open the bracket. With the 3-2 loss, the Huskies finished the season with final overall record of 6-7-4.

On Nov. 12, the Huskies lost a 3-2 road contest at Watertown on a bitterly cold evening. Watertown grabbed the 1-0 advantage with a goal in the 10th minute of the game. Carley Schmidt evened the score in the 34th minute off an assist from Julia Tanner. Watertown went up 2-1 early in the second half, and Maddie Stopkowski tied the score in the 74th minute with a goal on a helper from Alyssa Smith to make it 2-2. Watertown got the game winner with two minutes left in the game.

Football

The Huskies took a 72-32 defeat at home against North Branford last week. The loss moved Morgan’s record to 1-7 on the season.

The Huskies fell behind early in the game and were not able to mount a comeback against North Branford at the Peters Complex on Nov. 15. The Thunderbirds scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and made both kicks to take a 14-0 lead. Morgan was able to eat into the lead a bit with 6-yard reception by Alex Fratamico from Andrew Nye to make it 14-7 with a successful PAT. North Branford would put two more touchdowns on the board in the first quarter for the 26-7.

In the second quarter, Nye hit Liam Whelan for an 8-yard pass to make it 26-13. The Thunderbirds scored again and was successful in a two-point conversion to make it 34-13. North Branford put another TD on the board to make it 40-13. Morgan got it into the end zone again to trim it to 40-21, but the game would get no closer than that. North Branford added another touchdown to its tally before the end of the first half to make 46-21.

In the third quarter, North Branford outscored the Huskies 20-6, and each team would add a touchdown apiece in the fourth to eventually get to the 72-32 final.

Up next for the Huskies is a road contest versus Rockville at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21.
