North Haven Notches 42-14 Road Win Over Xavier

The North Haven football team notched its fourth win its last five games when the Indians claimed a 42-14 road victory versus Xavier last week. On Nov. 15, North Haven traveled to Middletown to face Xavier and routed the Falcons in an SCC Tier 1 matchup at Larry McHugh Field. The Indians improved to 5-4 on the year as they get ready to face Amity in their season finale.

North Haven held a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter, then scored the next three touchdowns of the game to take a 35-7 advantage versus Xavier. The Indians had another big night on the ground by rushing for 402 yards and six touchdowns in the win. Senior Albert Hooks ran nine times for 160 yards and two touchdowns for North Haven. Fellow senior Jaden Watson had 13 carries for 126 yards and a pair of TDs.

North Haven went on a long drive and scored on its opening possession against Xavier. Senior Corey Hooks finished off the drive by scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Indians a 6-0 lead. Junior Chase DiCarlo kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 with 1:27 to play in the first quarter.

On North Haven’s next series, Albert Hooks rushed for a 38-yard touchdown for the Indians with 9:13 remaining in the second quarter. DiCarlo hit the extra point and North Haven was up 14-0.

Xavier came back with a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 3:21 to play in the first half. However, on the Indians’ ensuing drive, Albert Hooks sprinted home for a 37-yard touchdown run to restore North Haven’s two-score lead. DiCarlo’s extra point made it 21-7 with 1:46 to go in the half.

The Indians took their 21-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. On its opening possession of the second half, North Haven went down the field again and scored another touchdown. This time, it was Jaden Watson who ran one in from seven yards out to put more points on the board for North Haven. DiCarlo sent the extra point through the uprights and the Indians had a 28-7 lead with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Watson found the end zone again when he capped off another North Haven drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 10:15 to play in the fourth quarter. DiCarlo’s fifth extra point of the night made the score 35-7.

Xavier scored on a 16-yard TD reception to make it 35-14 with 6:34 left in the game. With 3:28 to play, White ran for a 21-yard touchdown to increase North Haven’s lead to 41-14. Senior Raven Tebbetts came on to kick the extra point and put the final stamp on the Indians’ 42-14 victory.

North Haven picked up its first win of the year in SCC Tier 1 play by defeating Xavier. The Indians finished with a record of 1-3 in SCC Tier 1 this season.

Senior Max Augustine ran the ball eight times for 50 yards to aid North Haven’s ground game against Xavier. Corey Hooks had six carries for 32 yards and a score. White completed a 21-yard pass to senior captain Joe Vitale.

On defense, sophomore Matt Dodge had two interceptions for the Indians. Albert Hooks, Vitale, senior Kyle Maurca, and senior Carlo Frunzio each recorded a sack in the victory. Vitale also made seven tackles; Dodge, senior Joe Urtel, and senior captain Luke Maruca had six tackles apiece; and Watson contributed a pair of pass deflections for Head Coach Anthony Sagnella’s squad.

North Haven will take the field for its final game of the 2019 campaign when the Indians play at Amity in the 24th annual meeting between the teams on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, Nov. 27. The Spartans, who play in SCC Tier 2, have an overall record of 4-5 this year. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Amity High School in Woodbridge.
