One week after claiming the SCC crown, the Guilford girls’ soccer team won its first three games of the Class L State Tournament to advance to the semifinal round. Last week, the Indians notched a 2-0 win over North Haven, defeated Law by a 2-1 score in a game that came down to penalty kicks, and then posted a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Pomperaug in a quarterfinal matchup. Guilford now has an overall record of 16-2-4 on the season.
Rick Geremia is currently serving as Guilford’s interim head coach. Scott McMahon resigned as head coach two days after the Indians’ 2-1 win versus Shelton in the SCC final.
No. 6 seed Guilford started off states by claiming a 2-0 home win versus No. 27 seed North Haven in the first round on Nov. 12. Lily Riccio put Guilford on the board when she scored a goal on an assist from Emma McSweet in the 36th minute of the game. In the 55th minute, Kat Baseggio gave the Indians a 2-0 lead by scoring on an Olivia McMahon assist. Claire Mackenzie made four saves to get the shutout in goal for Guilford.
Two days later, Guilford hosted No. 22 seed Law for a second-round game. The Indians advanced by picking up a 2-1 victory after winning the decisive penalty kick session by a 5-3 margin.
Sophia Gabriel scored a goal to put Guilford up 1-0 at the 38:07 mark of the first half. The Indians held their one-goal lead until Law scored with seven minutes left in the game to tie it at 1-1.
The two teams played a pair of overtime periods that saw no goals, sending the contest to penalty kicks. McSweet, Mackenzie, and Taylor Gambardella each scored a goal for the Indians that helped them take a 3-1 lead. After Law cut it to 3-2, Moira Kellaher and Gabi Garcia-Perez netted goals to solidify the victory with Perez’s game-winner making it just inside the right-side upright.
Then on Nov. 16, Guilford traveled to Southbury to play No. 3 Pomperaug in the state quarterfinals. The Indians claimed a 1-0 victory in double overtime to advance to the semis. Riccio scored the only goal of the contest off a corner kick on an assist from McSweet with 1:12 to play in the first overtime period.
Guilford faced No. 2 seed Suffield in the Class L semifinals at Xavier High School on Nov. 19 (after press time). If the Indians win, they will play the winner of No. 8 Sheehan and No. 13 East Lyme for the Class L title on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Boys’ Soccer
Guilford has made its way into the Class L State Tournament quarterfinals after grinding out victories in the first three rounds of the tourney. The Indians defeated Foran (1-0), Masuk (4-0), and top-seeded Bristol Eastern (1-0) to set up a rematch against familiar foe Hand this week. Guilford, which is 15-1-6 overall, had recently claimed the SCC title by earning a 1-0 win over Hand in the conference final.
In the State Tournament, No. 8 seed Guilford opened up the draw with a 1-0 home win versus No. 25 seed Foran on Nov. 11. Evan Lemon scored the lone goal of the game on an assist from Jack Clancy. Josh Kosh recorded the shutout in goal for Guilford.
On Nov. 13, the Indians hosted No. 24 Masuk in the second round of states and notched a 4-0 victory against the Panthers. Niall O’Brien, Will Johnston, Anthony Ippolito, and Camilo Carmona scored the goals for the Indians, who saw Kosh notch another shutout.
Two days later, Guilford was on the road to face No. 1 seed Bristol Eastern in the Class L quarterfinals. The Indians posted their third shutout of the week with a 1-0 win to advance to the semis.
With 25 seconds left in the game, O’Brien was fouled and awarded a free kick. O’Brien crossed his attempt to Aidan Buchanan, who kicked it in to give Guilford the one-goal victory. Kosh earned his 13th shutout of the season.
The Indians played No. 4 seed Hand in the Class L semifinals at Middletown High School on Nov. 18 (after press time). If Guilford wins, it will face the winner of No. 6 Wethersfield and No. 10 Wilton in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Field Hockey
On the heels of defending their SCC title, the Indians reached the semifinals of the Class M State Tournament by defeating their first two opponents in the bracket. Guilford earned wins versus Avon (9-1) and South Windsor (4-0) to advance to a semifinal matchup against Branford this week. The Indians have a record of 21-0 this year.
On Nov. 12, top-seeded Guilford hosted Avon in the first round of the states and claimed a 9-1 victory. Maddie Epke scored five goals for the Indians to lead them to the win. Ella Stanley netted a pair of goals, while Hannah Tillier and Lexi Hitchcock added one goal apiece. Julia McDonald made five saves in goal for Guilford.
Two days later, the Indians squared off against No. 8 seed South Windsor for a quarterfinal contest at Guilford High School. Guilford blanked the Bobcats by a 4-0 score to move on to the semifinal round.
McDonald recorded her first shutout of the season in net for Guilford. Epke and Tillier both scored two goals to help the Indians prevail.
Guilford faced No. 5 seed Branford in the semifinals of the Class M State Tournament on Nov. 19 (after press time) at Cheshire High School. With a win, the Indians would play the winner of No. 7 Hand and No. 14 Bethel in the state final at Wethersfield High School on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Volleyball
Guilford has moved into the semifinals of the Class L State Tournament after winning its first two games in the draw last week. The Indians netted 3-0 victories against Hand and Platt to advance to the state semis, while improving to 22-3 on the season. Guilford was coming off of a week that saw the team win its first SCC title since 1994.
After earning a first-round bye, No. 5 seed Guilford started off the State Tournament by hosting No. 12 Hand for a second-round matchup on Nov. 14. The Indians swept the Tigers by a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-19) score to advance to the quarterfinals.
Emma Appleman had 16 kills with five aces and seven digs for Guilford. Juliet Young posted 16 digs and four aces, while Eva Ott Hill had 25 assists and eight aces.
Two days later, Guilford hosted No. 13 seed Platt for a quarterfinal match and earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) sweep against the Panthers. Appleman had eight kills with nine digs, and Emily Brouder chipped in with seven kills and two blocks for the Indians. Young contributed 14 digs and two aces, while Sabrina Zuniga had two kills and two aces in the win.
Guilford played No. 8 seed Woodstock Academy in the Class L semifinals on Nov. 20 (after press time) at Fitch High School. If the Indians win, they will face the winner of No. 2 Avon and No. 3 RHAM for the state title at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 10 a.m.
