Santacroce Places 2nd at Class M Diving Meet; Volleyball, Girls’ Soccer Lose in First Round of States

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Ava Santacroce continued her outstanding senior season by finishing in second place at the Class M Girls’ Diving State Championship at Bulkeley High School on Nov. 13. Santacroce scored a total of 402.55 points to earn runner-up honors at the meet and a spot on the All-State Team. Emma Gravgaard of Brookfield took first place with a score of 448.25 points.

Santacroce’s performance improved upon her fourth-place finish at last year’s state meet. A few weeks ago, she became the first diver in team history to take first place at the SCC Championship, doing so with a score 401.70 points.

Santacroce was one of three athletes to represent North Haven at the Class M diving competition. Sophomore Chandler Ceste-Martinez competed on behalf of the Indians and finished in eighth place with a lifetime-best total of 271.50 points. Senior captain Christina Stoeffler posted a score of 238.35 points and finished in 12th place for North Haven.

Santacroce, Ceste-Martinez, and Stoeffler scored points for North Haven that will carry into this week’s Class M State Championship, which took place at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 20 (after press time). After that, Santacroce will compete at State Open Diving Championship at Middletown High School on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 5:30 p.m. The State Open continues with the swimming competition at Yale University on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.

Volleyball

The North Haven volleyball team saw its season come to a close when the Indians took a 3-0 loss at Fitch in the first round of the Class L State Tournament. North Haven finished the year with an overall record of 10-11.

The 22nd-seeded Indians were on the road to face No. 11 Fitch in the opening round of the Class L tourney and lost a 3-0 decision on Nov. 11. The Falcons swept the match by the final score of 25-14, 25-17, 25-12. Junior Lily Pollard handed out 20 assists for North Haven in the contest. Sophomore Eveani Okwuosa posted five kills to go with two digs and one block. Senior Aubrey Reyes finished the match with four kills.

North Haven had qualified for the Class L State Tournament by finishing the regular season with a record of 10-9. Prior to states, the Indians competed in the SCC Tournament as the No. 13 seed and took a 3-2 loss versus No. 4 seed Law in a first-round match.

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians’ girls’ soccer squad hit the road to square off against Guilford for a first-round game in the Class L State Tournament last week. North Haven dropped a 2-0 decision to Guilford to finish its season with a record of 5-9-3.

North Haven entered the Class L bracket as the No. 27 after going on a second-half surge to qualify for the tournament. In the first round, the Indians took on 6th-seeded Guilford, which had recently won the SCC Tournament, and lost the game by a 2-0 final on Nov. 12.

North Haven had made states by posting a record of 5-8-3 during the regular season. The Indians bounced back from a 1-7 start to go 4-1-3 down the stretch to qualify.
