East Haven Volleyball, Girls’ Soccer Lose in First Round of States

Volleyball

The East Haven volleyball team saw its season come to a close when the Yellowjackets took a 3-2 loss versus Mercy in the first round of the Class L State Tournament. East Haven finished the year with an overall record of 11-10.

The 16th-seeded Yellowjackets were at home to face No. 17 seed Mercy in the opening round of the Class L tourney and lost a 3-2 decision on Nov. 11. The Tigers prevailed by the final score of 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 12-25, 15-13.

Senior Bella Ragaini handed out 39 assists and six digs for East Haven in the match. Fellow senior Eliza Goldberg posted 12 kills to go with four blocks. Senior captain Samantha Schlottman had two kills and one dig.

East Haven had qualified for the Class L State Tournament by finishing the regular season with a record of 10-8. Prior to states, the Yellowjackets competed in the SCC Tournament as the No. 8 seed. East Haven earned a 3-0 win over No. 9 seed West Haven in a first-round match contest before losing to top-seeded Guilford by a 3-0 score in the quarterfinals.

Girls’ Soccer

The Yellowjackets’ girls’ soccer squad hit the road to square off against Woodstock Academy for a first-round game in the Class L State Tournament last week. East Haven dropped a 3-0 decision to Woodstock to finish its season with a record of 7-7-3.

East Haven entered the Class L bracket as the No. 21 seed after going on a second-half surge to qualify for the tournament. In the first round, the Yellowjackets squared off against 12th-seeded Woodstock Academy and took a 3-0 defeat on Nov. 12.

East Haven had made states by posting a record of 7-6-3 during the regular season. The Yellowjackets bounced back from a 1-4-2 start to win their last four contests to qualify.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The East Haven-Wilbur Cross co-op girls’ swim squad continued its postseason by competing at the Class LL State Championship at Wesleyan University on Nov. 19 (after press time). The Yellowjackets had previously finished in 13th place at the SCC Championship that took place on Nov. 4. The State Open Championship will be held at Yale University on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
