Rams’ Field Hockey Loses in Conference Semis; Football Ready to Face Valley-Old Lyme

Field Hockey

The Old Saybrook field hockey team played in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals last week. The No. 3 seed Rams faced off against No. 2 Westbrook at the Indian River Complex on Nov. 4. Both teams played staunch defense in the low-scoring contest, which Old Saybrook lost by a 1-0 score.

Westbrook scored the lone goal of the game during the second half. Old Saybrook goalie Wendy Bowden made six saves in the contest.

The Rams are competing in the Class S State Tournament this week. No. 12 seed Old Saybrook played a first-round match at No. 5 seed Stonington on Nov. 12 (after press time). A win in that contest would advance the Rams to the quarterfinals, where they would play the winner of No. 4 seed Westbrook and No. 13 seed Weston on Thursday, Nov. 14. The semifinal round will be either on Tuesday, Nov. 19 or Wednesday, Nov. 20. The final is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23 at Wethersfield High School.

Football

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook football squad was on the bye last week. The next contest for the Rams will be against the Valley Regional-Old Lyme co-op team on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Valley Regional High School in Deep River. Both teams come into the contest with an overall record of 2-5 and are 2-2 in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division.
