Indians Swim to Several School Records at SCCs; Football Drops Contest to Cross


Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team recorded its best performance in program history at the SCC Championship by finishing in 13th place in the meet last week. The Indians scored 317 points and broke several school records on their way to taking 13th place at the SCC meet, which was held at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 4.

Senior Alex Mayo finished in fourth place for the 200 freestyle and broke her own school record by swimming a time of 1:57.62 at SCCs. Mayo also broke her own school record in the 100 butterfly while placing 11th with a time of 1:01.03.

Mayo was also part of two relay teams that set school records. The 200 freestyle relay of freshman Mia Amasino, freshman Grace Young, junior Haley Moriarty, and Mayo finished in seventh place with a school-record time of 1:46.33. In the 400 freestyle relay, Guilford’s team of freshman Alyssa Simione, Young, Moriarty, and Mayo took ninth place with a time of 3:50.90, breaking a school record.

Moriarty also turned in lifetime-best performances in her two individual events. Moriarty went a 56.60 to finish 11th in the 500 freestyle and finished at 1:12.70 to place 12th in the 100 breaststroke. Young finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.38 and took 28th in the 200 individual medley at 2:26.19. Freshman Rylan Jacobson finished 25th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.66.

Guilford is competing at the Class M State Championship that begins with the Swimming Qualifying at East Hartford High School at 5:55 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Class M Swimming Championship is at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. After the Class M meet, the State Open takes place at Yale University on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.

Football

The Guilford football team took a 25-13 defeat to Wilbur Cross in a road game at Bowen Field in New Haven on Nov. 8. The Indians have a record of 3-5 with two games left in the year.

Senior Charles Walcott ran for both of Guilford’s touchdowns against Cross. Walcott rushed for 139 yards on the night.

Guilford’s next game is an SCC Tier 3 matchup versus Bassick (1-7, 0-3) on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at Kavanaugh Field. The Indians are 1-3 in SCC Tier 3 action on the year.
